Thanks for responding with good feedbackYou should consider getting nesting pads. I’ve been using them for a while, and while chickens naturally dig into and spread the material to suit their needs, you can add straw on top for extra insulation.

I use hemp (see photo.) One bag isn't cheap, but I'm only about 2/3 of the way through a bag, starting from last June, so I'm on track for costs of ~25/year. It stays very clean, and it cushions the eggs nicely. If it ever does get poop or anything in it, a cat litter sifter will do the trick, or just flicking it out with the point of a trowel.I used pine needles,shredded pine yet my chickens scattered them all over the coop,I want the eggs cushioned and clean
