What caused this wound??

This chick lives in a brooder in our garage. I found her like this one morning, I have no idea what happened. Could a rat do this? We do have rats in the garage - is there anything I can do to help the wound heal? There are scabs on the top of her head and then this big callus like wound on the side of her neck.

I had a chick who scratched her head/neck like that at roughly the same age (head/neck feathers just starting to come in). Her new feathers coming in were very, very itchy. I put some neosporin - no pain relief/pain killer in the formula - on her wounds to help her.

Not saying the wound was not caused by something else - just my experience.
