What causes Pasty Butts?

We recently got a batch of chicks from a local breeder. Two came down with pasty butt (the two smallest for some reason). I think they were probably just stressed, but everything was resolved within a week. I watched YouTube videos on how to clean pasty butt (basically softening the stool with warm water and massaging it off, drying them really well, then keeping an eye on their little behinds and other chicks curious pecking).
