What causes this white coating on eggs?

My starlight green egger just started laying. Her first 2 eggs didn't have a white coating, but her last couple have looked like the one on the left. Does anyone know what causes eggs to have the white coating? Another one of my hens has been laying eggs with it too, and occasionally lays some that don't have it.

Congrats on your lovely eggs!

I would say new layer hiccups can cause a whole host of things to occur as the reproductive system comes online and works out it's kinks.. even when nutrition is spot on.

Check out this article on how eggs are formed and many of the things that can go awry as well as some of their POSSIBLE causes..

Marans eggs for example are considered to be at their normal expected average color around egg #20, IIRC.
