What Chicken Breed is Right for Me?

Silkies and Easter Eggers and Brahmas, oh my!! :)

I think I've decided against Silkies, as the chicks are only available straight run, and it would be a bit tough to find homes for the cockerels once they were old enough to tell which was which.

I'm really leaning toward Brahmas, although I am a bit leary of their size. Is it true the hens reach 9.5 lbs?

I can't thank you enough for your advice! :)

I know their shipping rates are expensive at MyPetChicken.

I've found a local source for Brahmas and Orpingtons, so one of those is likely to be the breed I'll have to go with. I kind of had my heart set on Silkies... But I hear Brahmas and Orps are great pets.

Well, you could look around on the Internet for some older birds as far as the silkies go, but I've also heard great things about the buff orps. If you like big, fat & fluffy you should check out the imported english orpington thread and just look at some of those birds- it always makes me feel happy. Don't be too quick to settle on something you don't really want, wait and look around.

MyPetChicken may be expensive but i ordered hatching eggs and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately we had a power outage on the day of the hatch and i only ended up with 5 babies.

Oh, thats terrible!! At least some hatched, though, that's good.

I was thinking about ordering from MyPetChicken, but they don't have Silkies available until July or August.

Those little birds are just too cute for their own good!

From what I've read, Orps are pretty good pets and layers, so they sound like a good option for a backyard chicken. No pun intended, haha.
