So I'm new to all this. I have a rode island red rooster and a white rock hen and red sex link hens. Can i cross the rooster with red sex link hens and what would I get?

Hi and welcome to our community!

I'm glad you could join BYC! Sounds like you have a lovely flock with some productive egg layers. I've enjoyed my Rhode Island Red hen greatly, because of her excellent egg production. Though I've never kept White Rocks, I've always thought they were beautiful.

If you cross the rooster with the Red Sex-Link hens, you'll end up with mixed breeds. They'll probably be nearly as good layers as their mothers, but not quite as good. In terms of color, I suspect that they'd have varying amounts of red on them.

I hope this answers your questions! Good luck with your flock and enjoy BYC!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. X2 on Wyandottes7; the offspring from you RIR rooster X your Red Sex Link hens will just be mixed breeds--primarily red with a smattering of white feathers; and while they will probably be good layers, they will likely not be the egg laying machines that their Red Sex Link mothers are. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

No, I think you will get approximately the same results as far as lay rate goes whether you breed your RIR with either the Red Sex Links or the White Rocks. They only way you will match the high lay rate of the sex links is by getting or breeding more sex links.
