I am thinking about getting 2-4 chicks net year in about March, I live where it gets cold in the winter with lots of snow, but in the summer it gets direct sunlight from about 11:30 to 4:00. I already have:

2 RIR
1 B Rock
1 Black Australorp
1 buff orp
1 ancona
1 red star
1 SLW

I for sure want an Americana and a GLW.

What do you think?

(I know that this is probably in the wrong place, but I put it here anyways.) :)

Another question, what chicken lays red eggs? My friend is asking this.

Red eggs..? Never heard of it... Marans lay chocolate (or dark brown ) colored eggs. RIRs/Production reds lay darkish/brown eggs... could look red...?

My Light Brahama is a sweety.. we get lots of snow here too. They lay lots of eggs.. maybe 4-5 a week? Pretty good. Just so sweet and cute!

No red eggs. There are Welsummers who lay a terra-cotta colored egg, and Marans who lay chocolate colored eggs (usually not that dark) and some birds lay a pinkish egg, or almost mauve.

I'm going to guess that this friend has heard of "cherry eggers" and thinks that the name refers to egg color. It doesn't. They're red chickens that lay brown eggs.

to get a ameraucana you will have to buy from a good breeder. if you order one from a hatchery it will be an ee and it could lay any color of egg. you should get what ever breed you want not what we want or think is a good breed for you. as for the red eggs there is no chicken that lays red eggs. there are no "pink" eggs, those that look pink are a brown egg with a tint on it making it appear pink but once you wash it off you will see the true egg color and it will dry looking pink like before. marans can lay pretty dark brown eggs depending on were you get your stock from.

I don't really care if it a purebred, but thanks for telling me, I don't think we have very many chicken breeders around here either. I got mine from Privet Hacthery through my local feed store.

Ya I told my friend that there are Marans that lay chocolate colored eggs, but she seemed dead set that there is a chicken that lays red eggs, I wasn't about to argue with her. LOL.

I have sexlinks; they're very cold hardy and extremely good layers of large sized brown eggs. They're not "cuddly" friendly, but aren't flighty...they'll come right up to us and even stand on our feet, but if you reach to touch them they'll back off a few inches.

I love my RIR and new hampshire they are so sweet and growing sssoooo fast.. EEs are great too ,,, hhhhmmm the list goes on and on lol

questions:

what color eggs would you like?
what color pattern do you prefer/like?
do you want only large foul or is bantams an option to you?
do you have a comb type you would like to have or prefer?
does egg production matter?

we can give you a list of breeds that can/will fit your answers that you can check out and see if you like any of them. want a chick that you like and fits your needs :)

I think it would be cool to add variety to the egg colors, and also to my flock. I don't want any bantams, and the comb does not matter at all. Yes, egg production does matter. No feathered legs, sorry. And I would like a chicken that is good with people. Thank you. :)
