Hello everyone. After a 10 yr hiatus of raising chickens I just picked up 4 little chicks from my local feed store on Tuesday. 3 Barred Rock pullets and 1 Frizzled Cochin bantum (st. run). These little girls are just as adorable as I remember. It's funny how easy it was to get back into it, I kept my brooder and incubator, so I could get into trouble if I'm not careful.

My question is... What color do you think this little cochin is going to be? I just can't tell.

Looks like a black cochin? I also noticed you have them on newspaper, that is really not good because they can get splayed legs. Don't mean to be in your business, but splayed legs suck.

She might be a blue cochin. I have four blue cochins babies that are 9 days old already. Yours does seem a little bit darker, but I don't know if it's because of the lighting. Either way you have a beautiful babe!

Thank you for the replies. I'm leaning towards thinking this little guy/girl is a black cochin. The other chicks in the brooder at the feed store were white (yellow), so I'm thinking they got an order of white and black cochins in and I got the last little black one. I'll definitely come back and update this post when (s)he gets older.

Regarding the news paper... It was just temporary as I used up all my paper towels lining the rest of the brooder. :| I made sure it wasn't the "slippery/smooth" type. But you're right; I went to cost-co and bought a 2-year supply of paper towels so they should be good to go now.
