I will add something for y'all to talk about ... A dark pied is a bird that carries the pied gene and does not have white on the wings . Those are splits to white or pieds. These blue birds out of pieds are the birds that you want to keep and use as breeders, connerhills

what is silver pied?

Is silver pied just pied that is mostly white?

where does the "silver" come from, and are the spots on the "silver pied" always india blue, or are the spots purple, opal, or whatever color?

Basically, the silver pied is a pied/white/white eye bird. But he explains it better.

And Conner, my dark pieds all have white primaries. They're dark pieds from silver pied lines, not whites or normal pieds, which may make a difference, but still...

A dark pied out of silver pied will be white eyed. So this will also give you white primaries. All silver pied are white eyed.

2 questions for you genetics experts out there....

Do pieds (loud pieds) that have a silver pied gene from one parent and a pied gene from the other parent tend to have more white than the pieds with a white gene from one parent and a pied gene form the other parent?

Also if a loud pied has white eyes, does that mean that he is pied X white plus WE gene OR pied X silver pied?

A loud pied with white eye (I would think) would basically be a silver pied, as that's pretty much where they started if I understand the origin of the silver pied. As to the rest I have no idea, but someone should know.

The pied chick has a lot of white on it now but pieds chicks as they get older will lose some of the white as it color out same as sliver pied they are hatched with a small dot of color and as they get older they get more color. A loud pied to me is a pied bird around 75% white. As you chick get older it will only have around 30 to 40% white.

connerhills has a good point about dark pied birds. A true dark pied is a bird that show no white these are split pied only. The one with the white flight are dark pieds but they carry the white gene also.

A pied white-eye is not a silver pied because it not carring the silver gene but breeding these to silver pieds will produce some silver pied off spring. Most all the loud pied are white-eye pied you don't see many blue pieds that has a lot of white.
