The bird that you posted look more like a Blue Golden Birchen than a Blue Birchen. The Gold Leakage could be from a back cross to Brown Red.

I understand what the Chicken Calculator says about Birchen it is to a point true but in the U.S. and some other countries lacing in the chest of males is a fault but yes it is found in some Birchen fowl and that is why I said, "that is besides the point".

So if the OP's bird looks similar to this Marans why would we not call it a Golden Birchen? Also the OP is from Nova Scotia, so what are the standards for Birchen color/pattern in Nova Scotia--do they follow the US or English standards? I think what you are saying is that this bird does not conform to a standard of perfection for 'Birchen', but what I am wondering is at what point do we use descriptive terms for a color on a HQ or mixed breed bird if we want to identify a color/pattern. Would it be ok to call it a Birchen-type pattern with gold bleed?

Wow I didnt know Birchen had so many different types. I never even heard of birchen until now! I love the brown/red ones, they are gorgeous birds.

I can understand there is some hot debate on the subject. I hope everyone can be open minded and talk in a constructive, polite manner. The internet is a hard place to convey words without it being able to be read in 5 different attitudes. I hope no one has been deeply offended by anything else anyone has said here.
