What color Maran?

um, I already explained what it was. Did you miss the part where I said that I have one? It's a Wheaten that came from Black Copper stock. It is a "true" Wheaten, it just has some extra coloring genes in addition to all of its Wheaten-ness.

IF it was a true Wheaten it would Black down/ undertone (this birds is Blue/ Grey) and with the Blue/ish down/ undertone
that would make it more of a "Blue Wheaten" than a Wheaten...

It's just that she has the Mahogany gene and leaks black as a result of the Black Copper parentage. Underneath that, it's a Wheaten Marans. There's no blue involved in this case, though I can see how one would get the impression. If my digital camera was not busted, I would take some detailed photos, but my cell phone cam is not up to the task.

For somebody so inclined, I think these birdies are potentially very valuable members of a Wheaten breeding program (introducing Black Coppers' egg color genetics into a Wheaten flock). That's why I'm happy to have one.

edit: just for comparison, here's Buddy Henry's page on Wheatens which shows the standard coloring: http://backwoodspoultryfarm.com/wheatenmarans.html

Thank you all for the info

It given me a lot more knowledge on what to do with her if I decided to selectively breed her. I'm still really new to chickens, but so far marans seem to be the breed that's caught my eye.

@le neige - I bought her from Wilburs Feed & Seed, from what I understand they only sold one batch of marans. I think it was early May that I bought them? I kinda regret buying only 3 chicks! The other two are roos but I think that I ended up with some pretty handsome roos at that!

If you do wind up keeping at least one of those roosters and thus get fertile, purebred eggs out of that beautiful girl, hit me up and let's talk bidness.

I would love to get more of these BC-Wheatens into my flock.

What color is the under color of the OP's bird? You can see it good in post 4...

Ashy gray/leaking black due to melanizers inherited from the Black Coppers.

This bird has nothing to do with Blue. If you think for a moment about the genetics involved, it will come to you.

This material has been covered on BYC before and is easily accessible via the search feature.

Thanks for playing.

If you go to post # 8
I said
"If it is some form of "Wheaten" (its not a true Wheaten) I would think that it is a form of a "Blue Wheaten" with it having the Blue in it where Wheaten has Black.."

I never said that it wasn't Wheaten, I said that it wasn't true Wheaten as by color.
( Female with body color from light salmon to wheat color. Males that are wild-type.)

Now the reason I say that it is more a Forum of Blue Wheaten or Blue Wheaten-ish would be do the the under color, and that the tail and from what I can see of the Primary wing feather the look more Gray too Blueish Black than solid "true" Black a color.

The OP's bird could have some Blue Copper Maran in it background it is not uncommon for some breeders to cross Blue Copper Marans and Black Copper Marans.

I know that Wheaten as in the gene ( eWh ) can the "Base" in many varieties as in;
Red (as in the Malay),
Buff Columbian,
Mille Flur,
Porcelain,
Coloumbian,
Cream,
Buff,
Black tailed Buff,
Black tailed Red,
Black Tailed White Etc.

And I thank you for playing also.
