I had seven 18 month old golden comets, all were fine yesterday today when my husband went to gather eggs one my favorite name Molly was dead in the nesting box. No signs of anything wrong. I am heartbroken she was not only a chicken she was a pet. Is there anything to look for in the way for disease I don't want anything happening to my flock. They all seem and look fine but how could she have died? We checked the vent and didn't see and any sticking out. For a few days we were only getting 3 eggs we changed the nesting boxes and they didn't seem to like them so we took them out yesterday. Yesterday we got 8 eggs we usually get between 7-9 per day so if one didn't lay it wasn't unusual. If anyone might have a clue as to what might have happened to cause her death it would be appreciated . I am really very sad I am homebound and Molly made me smile and eased the loneliness. None of the other girls had names only her.

I am so sorry to hear that.

Sometimes, chickens just die for unknown reasons, perhaps a heart attack. She could have had a broken egg in her or been egg bound, as I have lost hens in nest boxes as well.

I hope the others remain healthy and happy. Best of luck!
