What did I Buy?

You may be able to extend his life by regulating his food intake because he will literally eat himself to death. Eating and gaining weight was what he was bred to do.

Cornish cross cockerel. You'll have to regulate his feed if you want to keep him going. They almost always go down on their legs in time, especially males.

As others have mentioned, if you want to try to keep him as a pet, allow him food morning and evening, not in between and if he is active and can free range so much the better. Put his water as far away from the feed as possible so he needs to walk (exercise)to get from one to the other.
I know someone kept a few of the hens alive and in their layer flock by doing this and got eggs from them. Said they laid better than expected.

Agreed, I know someone who kept a hen alive for a year and a half before she had a stroke or heart attack. She raised a little batch of babies. Free ranging did a lot to help her stay smallerand fit.
