We are new to keeping chickens. The chickens are all acting normal and laying eggs normally until this morning. We have older chickens (2-3 years old) and some younger chickens a bit more than a year old. We found this "thing" in our coop just now. I apologize for the graphic image posted. Please help!

I want to say lash egg but that is very strange looking even for a lash egg

hmmm..........that's interesting I had a hen that passed away recently. She passed something a month prior that looked similar but was much smaller. After she passed it she pooped about a dozen times within an hour. She was okay for about a month but then she started passing small rocks. Maybe it's not the same at least I hope so.

I would just keep an eye on them it's easy to pick up on when one is not feeling well.

That is odd and alarming.

I don't think it is a lash egg because those are made up of cheesy substance that is basically pussy discharge (true puss is a cheese-like substance). Those indicate severe infection of the oviduct.

In the OP's photo, you can see the formation of the egg sac membrane, with simply albumin, but that's a whole lot of blood that ought not to be there. It indicates hemorrhage somewhere.

Watch and wait. I should think the hen that laid this will begin to show other symptoms as well that may help you assess her better.

Typical causes of sudden shell-less eggs can be diseases such as Newcastle, Infectious Bronchitis, and Egg Drop Syndrome. All those are viral infections.

Also with aging hens, ovarian cancers are common especially in the high production commercial breeds and hybrids.

Sorry a hen is laying this. I can't imagine it bodes well for her.
