What did they do for calcium in the old days?

We eat raw milk. The chickens get the leftover bowls of cereal every morning, table scraps, and egg shells. They also "free range" all day. I live on a residential lot that is only is slightly larger than standard so they have a nice size back yard. They have areas that they get to dig through and right now the winter garden isn't planted yet (we need to get on this) so they are digging in the garden as well. They have eaten very little feed (about 1/4 c per hen, I am estimating) but I still get 3 to 4 eggs a day from my 4 hens. Since there is very little cost to feed them, I feel that the cost savings out weighs any loss of production. Does that make sense?

Oysters aren't a new invention. I've got poultry books from the late 1800s that mention using crushed oyster shells for calcium supplimentation.
