The pic of the brown one, pic 5 I think the close up of the head, is that the beginnings of a forked comb I see just above the cage bar? If so that speaks of polish deinately that and the mohawk crest going on. Polish mix? That is some pretty l;oose barring for a BR from everything I've seen but it definately looks roo-ish. Hmmmm run that one past Speckled Hen see what she says?
I am far from any kind of expert these are just things I see in the photos!
I think the brown one is really kewl no matter what it is!

I change my answer for the brown one. I think it's a Sultan cross. That would explain the crest, the five toes, feathered feet, and the comb.

Thanks so much for your input. I had never even heard of some of these breeds! I showed your posts to my kids in class today and they had a great time researching the different breeds suggested and forming their own conclusions. The discussion was fascinating! Hatching these chicks in my class was one of their most memorable experiences of the year. Since today was their last day of school this year, I had to promise to update them by e-mail if I found out anything new. Thank you so much for adding to this great learning experience. I'd still welcome any new conjectures. (I'm happy with them whatever they are.)
