What did you do in the garden today?

Hi there all! We had sun on Saturday so I got some dirt time in, but Sunday was rainy, windy and pretty cold--boo! I had the first asparagus spears with dinner, and thinned the kale, tatsoi, chard and pea shoots for a salad. My tomatoes are also more than ready to go outside, Cap.

I divided my lemon balm, chives, peppermint and chocolate mint, and potted up a bunch more thyme and basil. Started a flat of zinnias and marigolds.

Need to clear out the back two raised beds next, and put up a couple bamboo teepees for cukes and beans. My son finished removing the jasmine from the fence, which means the chickens can't jump on it and invade.

I have never in my life tasted Kohlrabi, that I know of. So... I really should grow some, b/c trying a veggie bought at the store just is not the same as home grown.

I always thought I hated butternut squash. That's all my BIL ever buys. And I've had it at his house. Might as well have been eating a cardboard box. So, 2 years ago, I decided to try growing it. Guess what? I LIKE butternut! As a matter of fact, it's made it's way onto my "must grow it often" list.

I have not been able to "wrap my head around" eggplant. Simply can't enjoy eating it. Flavor is odd, and the last time I had it, the skin was so tough, I couldn't even bite through it. So, this year I am going to grow egg plant, in a never ending quest to "learn to like it". But, you can't make me want to learn to like okra!

I really like to grow eggplant, just because it's a pretty plant with beautiful flowers. Don't like the skin either, so I always either peel it or grow ones with very thin skins (Casper, Listada di Gandia). And for me, roasting it is the key--makes a huge difference in texture. Once that's done, it will soak up any kind of sauce/marinade you want. I put the roasted cubes in during the last phase of a thai curry, or bread and flash fry for eggplant parm.

A friend gave me a couple of kohlrabi plants last spring. Cool-looking aliens, but I didn't really know what to do with it. Ate it raw like carrot sticks, and it was kinda blah. Still liked how it looked though.

I'm going to grow a bit of okra this year, first time ever. I'm not a fan, though I found out this winter that picked okra is actually tasty. We'll see.
