What did you do in the garden today?

Bought some seeds today when I went to the store.

I've been watering this morning and found a little hummingbird playing in the water and visiting the flowers. He's small enough to fit through the 1" holes in the chicken wire. Wish I'd had my phone!

PS the sunflowers are starting to sprout.

Strawberries are hard to find. I got the roots st the local feed store and some of them took in less than a week. I saw last year Johny seeds had plants but haven’t tried them Seem to have a good rep though

Johnny's has a stellar reputation, but their prices are... pricey. Check out Fedco Seeds. I actually prefer Fedco to Johnny's. Prices are much more reasonable, and they don't play the GMO game, nor do business with Monsanto.

As for strawberries, you will need to decide whether you want everbearers or short season berries. If you want a hand full now and then but all season long go with the everbearer. If you want a good harvest so you can put up your strawberry crop, go for the short season berries. What grows well for me in Zone 4 may not do well in Zone 6. Check with your County Ag. Extension office to see what varieties perform well in your area.

Finished my melon trellis and most of my cucumber trellis before the rain. Planted musk melon, cabbages couple rows of onion , purple carrots Also planted pickling cukes, slicing cukes and Mexican gherkin cucumber. Saw some kale and more spinach sprouting today!
