What did you do in the garden today?

Spring in MA finally too.:wee Actually ended up with a sunburn last two days! Not enough sun, then too much. Been putting seeds in garden, peas, spinach, swiss chard... leaf lettuce already sprouted! Today I spent a long time digging out daylillies, Iris, and Lilly of the valley growing up through chain link fence, now that I can see what's what. Transplanted to areas where they can spread out, even if they are shocked I think they'll do better than where they were. It was like doing surgery to separate those decades old plantings from each other and some kind of super grass. :barnie

My companion planting book says that peppers and beans are not good companions b/c both are host to anthracnose. Aside from that, I can think of several other reasons why you wouldn't want them planted together: Peppers like their soil on the lean side. Too much nitrogen, and you will have lush plants but no fruit. Peppers also love the heat. If they get shaded by exuberant bush beans, they will rebel.

Rachel, I love your trellis. Very nice looking, and I expect it will be very sturdy. Clever use of the old step ladder. I couldn't even see it in there till I looked closely.

Finally, spring has arrived in Maine. Frogs started peeping this afternoon. I got a row of peas, some beets, spinach, mixed greens planted. Moved the bean trellis. Always a challenge to decide where to plant stuff.

I moved the seedlings out of the office. They will be spending their days outside when weather allows, and nights in the garage so they can harden off for planting.

Gave some Stella D'Oro and Iris (and some eggs) to the teen age girls down the street. They were delighted to have them. What a joy to see 2 sisters happily working in the soil to beautify their yard while their parents work!!!
Thanks. I always like to know why when it comes to that. I’ll have to find a new spot for them. Don’t want to risk all my peppers. Maybe near tomatoes... I’ll look into it Teenagers planting... rare sighting but I love it. Hopefully a growing trend. My daughter used to love helping me in the garden... now she’s 16 so it takes a little more convincing to get her out there. She does need to check on the strawberries and carrots ( her favorite)

Yes near tomatoes is fine for peppers.

I raked the yard and swept the patio this morning, poop scooped in the coop and dumped in the composter, watered the grass and gave the girls fresh water. Tried out my new dust mask, works great!
I've noticed a significant drop in dust since I switched to hay in the coop and the little yard there. The girls are beginning to actively scratch around in it which seems to make them happy. I love the excited sounds they make when they find something particularly yummy.
Happy gardening everyone. I'm going to scrounge through the clearance at a few nurseries to see what I can find.

My son is 16 and he used to love helping me in the garden too! That's actually why I started. When he was two we planted a weird-colored veggie garden--blue potatoes, purple carrots, rainbow tomatoes, etc. It was fun and mushroomed from there. Now he just grazes. Although, he has been great this spring with invasive vine removal, so I'll take it.

I'm working from home today to concentrate (I'm on a short break, really! :) ) but for lunch I'm going to go and reseed some beans. I can't remember the usual germination time, but I'm wondering if the soil in the raised beds was still too cold.
