What did you do in the garden today?

Carebear, this is from a local nursery on fall planting:
August Planting List

August is the in-between month between warm season and cool season vegetables. It’s not too late to put in final crop of Warm Season Veggies such as Beans, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Squash and Tomatoes from starts. Or you can start seeds of Cool Season Edibles in containers placed in a part shade / cool location to plant out after the weather cools. Or you can take a break this month, enjoy the summer harvest and think about putting your fall garden in next month.
The most important job in the edible garden this month is irrigation. Water fruit trees deeply. Be especially careful of container plants and new plantings, which may dry out quickly. Keeping your vegetables picked will prolong harvest.
There is time to plant a late crop of fall Tomatoes if you hurry. Any tomato labeled “early” which means quick maturing is a good choice. One favorite is Early Girl. Also consider tomatoes developed for cool climates with names like Oregon Spring or Siberia.
To go with the tomatoes? Plant Basil to continue summer flavors into fall.
Year Round Veggies: Beets, Carrots, Chard, Radish and Turnips may be planted if seedlings are not allowed to dry out.
Most Herbs may be planted in August: Marjoram, Oregano, Lavender, Mint, Thyme, Tarragon, and Savory as well as Basil, Parsley, and Cilantro.
Container grown Fruit trees are still available:Apple, Apricot, Peach, Fig, Pomegranate, and Plum etc. We also have fruiting vines: Grape, Ollalieberry and Boysenberry.
Tropical and Sub-Tropical Trees: Citrus, Avocado, Banana, Guava etc. may be planted this month.
Have a great August!

Fall /Winter Cool Season Vegetables are arriving in the Nursery. Check out our seed racks too.
It is time to plant: Asian Greens, Arugula, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Fava Beans, Head Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Mesclun, Mustard Greens, Onion, Parsley, Peas, Potatoes, Radish, Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Turnips.
Continue to plant: Perennial Herbs such as: Oregano, Marjoram, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, and Chives. Biennial Herbs like Parsley may be planted now as well.
Cool season Tomatoes are in. These are “early” (quick maturing) varieties developed and tested for cold climates. They are able to grow, develop, tolerate, and set fruit in the cooling temperatures and shorter days of fall. Notice some of their interesting names: Siberia, Moscow, and Glasnost.

laying about a thousand feet of 1/2" poly line for drip irrigation and getting things setup for low poly tunnel. Actually next day or two.
Making hoops for the low poly tunnel for winter growing. Irrigation system for the winter?? AM I NUTS? no I do grow spinach, carrots, turnips, parsnips, lettuce of all sorts over the winter.

Oh forgot, needing to broadcast my cover crop mixture of fava, crimson clover, pea,... to fix nitrogen back into the soil. Cost of the seed is about 1/5 of what I would have to spend on nitrogen fertilizer alone. Also the cover crop will choke out weeds so I don't use any herbicide. Occasional fungicide though...

Things to plant. garlic. cover crop seeds, winter wheat... keeping busy.

Will start to collect tomato seeds, pepper seeds, beans all for seeds for next year...

Covered the garlic bulbs up a bit with dirt(we had a huge downpour today), blocked off bean plants from chickens, pruned the tomato plants... oh, and got rid of the aphid covered watermelon plants. I hate aphids...

I planted some mustard green seeds and garlic. I potted 8 broccoli plants, 2 cauliflower and 2 lettuce plants for my 5 year old grand daughter. She helped plant the seeds several weeks ago, so I started her a container garden to take home. I also transplanted some of the 78 broccoli plants that came up.

Then I watered everything and misted a green tree frog I found in the collards.
