What did you do in the garden today?

Same here! Such industrious garden "helpers" they are. Getting ready to put in garlic, carrots, red potatoes, and maybe some dill and stuff. I'll know exactly what I'm going to plant when I'm out there with all the seed packets. But the first three for sure.

I broke my Fiskars weed puller. They are supposed to have a lifetime guarantee, I think, so I'll take it back to Home Depot. I've been pulling dandelions still because I don't want them back in the spring.

A week ago I planted salad greens and radishes under cold frames for the first time ever. They have sprouted! I'm following tips from this book:

We are getting our big summer garden ready for fall; so we opened the gates and invited the chickens to visit. They spent a happy day helping us. They are not fans of the peppers, berry vines or winter squash so things will probably be safe for a few days of bug hunting.

We are planting, but it is protected from their hunt and pecking.

What are you planting for fall? Just curious. I'm playing with a fall garden my first time.

as I do every time I dig in the garden, tried not to hit a chicken.

Hilarious!! Same here, except I'm usually trying not to hit a digging dog.

I'm wanting to have a fall garden but I wasn't sure what would grow or if I was getting too late of a start. Could I grow these now?

I played with my garden today. Planted some clearance mums I found at lowes. Checked on my broccoli.
Oh! And I got a composted on sale at lowes today. Pretty neat little "hut" type thing. It appears it will keep the critters out of it a little better than my old set up.

Carebear, this is from a local nursery on fall planting:

August Planting List

August is the in-between month between warm season and cool season vegetables. It’s not too late to put in final crop of Warm Season Veggies such as Beans, Corn, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Squash and Tomatoes from starts. Or you can start seeds of Cool Season Edibles in containers placed in a part shade / cool location to plant out after the weather cools. Or you can take a break this month, enjoy the summer harvest and think about putting your fall garden in next month.
The most important job in the edible garden this month is irrigation. Water fruit trees deeply. Be especially careful of container plants and new plantings, which may dry out quickly. Keeping your vegetables picked will prolong harvest.
There is time to plant a late crop of fall Tomatoes if you hurry. Any tomato labeled “early” which means quick maturing is a good choice. One favorite is Early Girl. Also consider tomatoes developed for cool climates with names like Oregon Spring or Siberia.
To go with the tomatoes? Plant Basil to continue summer flavors into fall.
Year Round Veggies: Beets, Carrots, Chard, Radish and Turnips may be planted if seedlings are not allowed to dry out.
Most Herbs may be planted in August: Marjoram, Oregano, Lavender, Mint, Thyme, Tarragon, and Savory as well as Basil, Parsley, and Cilantro.
Container grown Fruit trees are still available:Apple, Apricot, Peach, Fig, Pomegranate, and Plum etc. We also have fruiting vines: Grape, Ollalieberry and Boysenberry.
Tropical and Sub-Tropical Trees: Citrus, Avocado, Banana, Guava etc. may be planted this month.
Have a great August!

September

Fall /Winter Cool Season Vegetables are arriving in the Nursery. Check out our seed racks too.
It is time to plant: Asian Greens, Arugula, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Fava Beans, Head Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Mesclun, Mustard Greens, Onion, Parsley, Peas, Potatoes, Radish, Spinach, Swiss Chard, and Turnips.
Continue to plant: Perennial Herbs such as: Oregano, Marjoram, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, and Chives. Biennial Herbs like Parsley may be planted now as well.
Cool season Tomatoes are in. These are “early” (quick maturing) varieties developed and tested for cold climates. They are able to grow, develop, tolerate, and set fruit in the cooling temperatures and shorter days of fall. Notice some of their interesting names: Siberia, Moscow, and Glasnost.
Fall is a great growing season in Southern California. Enjoy your autumn gardening

Tore out a 75 foot row of mixed Ouachita and Natchez blackberries. Horrible sour things.....some people like them but it just depends on your soil I guess, here they are just nasty. I absolutely adore the huge and sweet Kiowa blackberries though they sure are thorny so this winter will order the bareroot Kiowas and in they will go. With the new 75 foot row will have 100 feet of them growing.
