What did you do in the garden today?

My peace lilies appears to be doing well today. Glad I didn't kill it. I think I will start some leeks indoor then when I can get to my garden beds I can direct seed in the bed to stagger the harvest. I'm getting four BR chicks next Wednesday. After I get them settled into their brooder I'll start the tomato, pepper, cucumber, lettuce and squash plants. I'm getting excited now. There was a flock of bluebirds in my yard a couple of days ago. Spring is really coming. I'm blocking out the fact that it was 8F at 6:30 this morning and right now it is a balmy 13F. Gotta go now and defrost the water in the chicken coop.

It was 19 degrees when I left for work this morning. Windchill was single digits. Not getting above freezing for the second day in a row. I don't mind the cold weather but this is not the time for it!
My cauliflower started to sprout today and so did the leeks. Some of the wallawalla onions are almost 2" now!
Cool! How many Cauliflower plants do you have planned for this year?

Ooof, that's a big cold. We're also really cold here.

I ordered 25 seeds. I wanna say I saw 24 come up but I have 27 planted and I'm expecting them all to come up, really. The place I usually buy from has really excellent germination rates on a lot of their seeds. :)

Wow, that's a lot of cauliflower. I'm guessing you'll sell some of them? I grow mainly for my own consumption but I will sell excess. Last year I gave a lot away since I was still working fulltime and didn't have time to process everything. This year I'll have plenty of time.

@penny1960 I order from High mowing Seeds in Vermont. They're an independent seed company, not associated with any major agribusiness, and they work mostly with small growers.

They sell nothing but organic vegetable seeds that do well in organic gardens and have a lot of interesting heirloom, open pollinated and F1 hybrid varieties. These are Goodman Cauliflower, an open pollinated variety, which means they breed true if you care about stuff like that.

25 seeds is actually the smallest package they have, about $4 worth of seeds... Which around here isn't much more than the cost of a single head of cauliflower TBH. I'm mostly growing to feed my household of three people... There's an old rule of thumb for farming that says grow four crops: one for you, one for your neighbor, one for wild animals and one for the weather and then if you're lucky you'll have enough to feed yourself for the year. I ascribe to that heavily and usually grow as much as I reasonably can. If I get too much I have friends and family to feed and garden with.

But chances are good I'll get enough to eat (we eat a lot of curry and it goes well in it), then some to freeze and some to pickle and can, and some will get eaten by our horrible groundhogs and some to give away to a few gardeners who help me do planting days and then when all that's done I won't have any leftovers if I even get that far.
