What did you do in the garden today?

I'm not sure if I should use coffee grounds in the compost. Apparently it's a good slug and cat repellent when scattered through out the garden. There is a local cat that visits my yard and garden area every night. And BTW: It's still cold here this morning. It was 18F when I got out of bed and it's now up to a balmy 35F. LOL! This is supposed to be the last of the really cold mornings. Fingers crossed.

Funny thing is though, the smaller places have healthier plants and more variety. Our local mom and pop hardware store sells the best tomato starts.


Who assumes stuff like that? And says it?

Our garden stores it depends on what you're looking for. Wrth has it right for our locality at least. All the small garden centers around here are focused so deep on landscaping and houseplants that there's almost nothing if you want a vegetable or fruit. I know - I worked at one of those garden centers for a while and I saw what they got in each year. Whereas home depot has a wide variety of edible plants at reasonable prices every year around the same time. They have a surprising number of things I like such as ever bearing strawberries, heirloom vegetables, seed potatoes, onion sets, etc.

Also, I think it's fair to make friends based off of those traits. There's a BIG sense of community surrounding those particular shared traits. There's a good number of shared experiences there that are likely. There's also a few default things we can infer from those statements that are positive traits IMO and I'm pretty open to being friends with anyone who has some time to spare talking to me and isn't a jerk.

Speaking of compost: I was thinking about putting some of the chicken poo shavings into my rotating composter. I don't have as many vegetable scraps anymore because the chickens eat most of them, so I thought this might break down the wood shavings quicker. Has anyone tried this?

You can buy bales of straw, or ask the feed store for the loose hay that falls off the stacks of bales. Both are good in the compost.

Often you can get loose that way most often strapped farmers take it if the store lets them .. I use my coffee grounds on my roses they love coffee all else is composted chicken poo can go in we have old style compost box of wood gets turned weekly ..
Tons to do today french bread, coops, picking up peeps at 4 getting 6 olive eggers then

X 2. I get huge bags from the feed store and use it in the coop, cheaper than shavings. When it gets old I put in the compost, I like it better too.

We are too wet here hay or straw molds so depends on the climate 9 dollars for huge bales
of shavings will stay with that

Preparing Garden. I use to live in Florida where if you threw it at the ground it would grow. Now I live in North Georgia. I am preparing a small 8X10 area. Preparation. Created a dusting for the Feathered kids so they can get in there and mix the dirt, coffee ground, egg shells and above all fire place ash's. They love to dust so I'm moving them around the 8X10 area to prepare the ground for me. Afterwards it will be fenced off and they will go to their normal dusting area by the holly tree and pine tree. See I'm lazy

No issues with that. I was laughing at the person who read an innocuous post and came up with a label. People actually do that and it used to make me mad, now I just laugh at them. Lower blood pressure

You're right about the small places in one respect, I have to visit a few before I have everything I want. Better IMHO than supporting big business. Personal preference.

Yeah, I cant find half of what I'm after if I went driving for 2 hours at our stores. Home depot has it all in one place and they actually HAVE it. I'll have to go take pictures of the average selection at my garden center or something. Their whole building for all non-plant/dirt products is twice the size of my living room.
