What did you do in the garden today?

The baby chicks have been relocated to the "getting to know you suite." I'm so glad to get them out of my sunroom. My hens seemed a little interested in them until I threw out a handful of scratch and they forgot all about the new roomies. I tried taking pictures but the little buggers were moving too much. It's been raining off and on all day but it's almost 70F and muggy. I'm OK with that. Tomorrow I plan on spending some quality time in the garden. I will be planting my seedlings then covering them with some poultry wire to keep the squirrels and the chipmunks from tasting them.

Sunk my posts for the new garden fence. 3 ft down in concrete. . I am hot and sunburned despite several applications of sunscreen. It is just so dry and sunny today that it is like being under a magnifying glass.

Squash are now up 4 inches! Seriously. I think they're radioactive or something!

It was so warm that I had to hose down the fuzzies today. I left the sprinklers out for them to play in for a while too.

I weeded, saw that my peanuts are coming up, planted the last of the sugar cane, made a small new bed for some daylilies by the end of the driveway, and planted some strawberry plants in a new bed my 7yr old and I made this morning.

Are we allowed to do plant or seed swaps on here? I've got TONS of stuff for flower garden and veggie garden and trading is so much fun. I didnt want to start a post if it wasn't allowed though, I'm new and like it here

Sounds like a very productive day!

People will often mention what seeds they have available to give away or for trade here in the thread and then those folks will deal via PM.

Hiya :frow
Nice to meet you!
Welcome.
My parents lived in Apple Valley at one time...in California. Good luck with your garden.

Strawberry update! Way back in January, some Mignonette Strawberry seeds were planted. They took between 10-50 days to germinate in Jiffy pots (packaging says 30-40 days germination), and I got about 60% germination, which is about the expected rate.

When it finally started to warm up above freezing and the wind stopped blowing all the time, I put them in a little greenhouse on the deck. A few succumbed to the wind, by getting bent, breaking their stem. However, there are about 30 strong survivors so far. I'm trying to keep them out of the strong wind, but cant always predict this, and also trying to keep the little greenhouse situated so it doesn't get blown over by the wind (so far, so good). Here they are today - the one at the bottom of the pic is the largest of these strawberry plants! Apparently they grow a very tasty, but small strawberry, and certainly hope it is worth the wait!

Here is when I began this adventure - with the seed packet and pods:

We also purchased some bare root strawberry plants - a June bearing variety. I followed the directions to soak for 2 hours, then hack off all roots, leaving only about 3" of roots below the crown. They survived and seem to all be healthy, with a few that have the beginnings of a bloom stem. These bare root strawberries are probably 1000x larger than the Mignonettes above!
