What did you do in the garden today?

Growing in straw bales is not a new concept. Excellent drainage for healthy roots. I have never done it,,,,,,, but think it would require frequent watering. So water source and availability a definite factor.

I've been tempted to try a method I read about years ago for growing tomatoes. Take an older bale of straw and dig out a pit or two...

You have to be *very* careful where you get the straw or hay. Most are treated with long lasting herbicide that prevents the growth of other plants than grasses. The straw bale movement started before the herbicides did, back in the sixties. Also, to do toms in a straw bale, you also need urine on the bale. Not such a cute container garden :lau

It rained yesterday with a little break (couple hours) it’s been raining the last 24 hrs. Last night I did some emergency digging to reinforce some burms and gully’s. One area did well so far diverts water to a little “pond” area in the back yard away from the coop.
By the coop...I could see some changes that need to be made.
I couldn’t sleep.
Checked the girls around 3am. I had put a galvanized support diagonally to support my tarp over the run. Anyone remember my circus pole disaster?? Anywho...support held the weight although I did push up and out water from underneath it.
There’s allot of rain.
It’s dark out but I can see ripples and rain drops in the water outside my house! It looks like we’re on a island :(
Can’t wait to see what the creek looks like.

They both had them on the porch . So a roof over them .

I bring mine out under dappled shade for a few days before they brave the full sun, even then they get shade until 10:30 then no shade till the sun goes down.

I feel your pain. When we built our coop, we had to build it above the highest flood mark and then raised it up, which worked great actually, it gives them a shade spot under the coop on really hot days. Only if they start laying under there, I have to crawl. Not sure I can do that anymore.

So my husband can go outside and pee on a haybale and my tomatoes will do great? Wish I'd known that when the grandsons were living here. Would have saved a lot of time cleaning up their bathroom!

Good morning gardeners. Thank you @WthrLady for naming my little exotic plant. I had a feeling it was in the lily family from the look of the foliage. They come in other colors apparently so maybe next year I'll get this one a companion. I did get some dirt moved into one of the herb beds. That was hard work for the lifting of the buckets. My backyard is like two giant steps. Regarding the plants dying off: I really think it's from the yo yo temperatures and all the rain. I think the excessive rain is washing all the nutrients away from the little roots. Just a thought. I picked up a bunch of herbs at the garden center I stopped at yesterday. Their prices are a little high, but you can find what your looking for there. Rain is moving in within the next 2 hours and continue half the night. I hope to get my backyard mowed tomorrow. It doesn't take very long, but it takes forever to dry out enough to mow it. Happy planting all!

We must be related.

I just mite have to take You up on this one. :celebrate
Will have to wait until after Halloween when everyone that decorates with straw bales puts them curbside. They will rest outdoors all winter and will get plenty of weather rinse so whatever bad is in there may get rinsed out by snow, and rain.:thumbsup
I'm in the city, so straw availability is not that wide, like it gets for Halloween. I think even Walmart sells it then for Halloween decor.
I may try a bale of hay as well. Whats the worst that could happen???:idunno

Problem solved. With this combination.
