What did you do in the garden today?

We have gotten 7 inches of rain over the weekend, and more is predicted for tonight and tomorrow. I haven't done much but pull the potted garden plants under the covered back patio. It has been raining nonstop!

I am also trying to get ready for a vacation, for 10 days! Packing for a family of four for 10 days, with airline luggage regulations is not easy.

My neighbor is going to take care of the animals and chickens, and water the garden as needed. So I am also trying to get all the pet and chicken food lined out and set out for easy access. I don't know if they will do much cleaning with the chicken coop (we scoop poop daily), so we may come back to a yucky mess. Our run is a semi deep litter, but the inside of the coop is raised, so we use sand and scoop it daily.
It's been raining nonstop here too! So much it's just soggy in the yard, some of my garden has white fuzzy stuff growing on it, and it's going to take a month of sun to dry the yard out! Ugh, we can't even drive on the yard to get water to our cistern for fear of sinking so we have to get water delivered!

Hopefully my plants survive... last year blight tore through my garden because it seemed like it rained for 19 weeks straight.

Good morning gardeners. Yesterday I stopped at the greenhouse around the corner and found some replacement plants. I picked up 3 pickling cucumbers, 4 butternut squash and more romaine lettuce. Also, had picked up some carrot seeds. I planted the cucumbers with the pole beans and broccoli remnants, the carrots went into a row between the leeks and the squash and lettuce went into their original bed. Still no sign of the groundhog. This morning everything looked fine and of course the broccoli remnants appear to be growing new leaves and the original butternut squash seeds are just now coming through the dirt. That's OK. When inspecting my spinach yesterday I noticed signs that it was beginning to bolt so I picked it all. What a humbling way to gain some perspective. This was the first time I planted spinach that actually grew. I planted baby leaf. After cleaning and washing the total harvest on this was 2 ounces. That's about 2 cups of spinach leaves. So, in the future I will not be planting baby leaf spinach. Will need to find something that gets a little taller and has bigger leaves. I still have chard seeds so will be planting them today. Back to mowing today before the evening rain moves in.

Rained all night and still raining. Should stop this morning, then can inspect the garden.

In looking for fruit trees, we see Stark brothers has a good selection (although many options sold out right now). Any other recommendations for source of fruit trees? We want plum, Asian pear, and apricot trees in particular. A relative on the west coast recommended Raintree nursery.

Any advice on weed prevention? We have had a lot of rain and because of it I have not been able to pull weeds. We're all organic so we cant use pesticides. I laid down some landscaping fabric to take out the weeds between the rows. I tried laying down newspaper to make it so we only had to pull around the plants but it didnt work. The newspaper ended up getting swept away by the wind and didnt stick to the ground even after wetting it. I just know im doing something wrong. We plan to use mulch next year but we dont have any this year to use. We have too many trees for us to say its worth buying mulch when we can make our own.

Try cardboard. It's heavier than just paper and biodegrades nicely.

Jung seed is another I have purchased from. Give them a try.

Thanks! Since it looks like we have to wait for any trees, we figure we will do some research on the sources, and options they offer to make a decision. We like the many options available through Stark (type and variety of tree sizes) and overall, they seem to have very good reviews.

Give her a :hugs for doing that.:thumbsup

She can't bear to see any creature hurt. She will take spiders out of the house, and even catches the stinkbugs that infiltrate the house every spring. She has wanted to be a wildlife biologist since she first watched Wild Kratts at age 4.

Yeah, last summer most of my garden was ruined by all the rain. This year hasn't been so bad, but when it does rain, it rains nonstop for days! We have been under a flood warning for two days now. Our river behind our house has flooded over the banks already, and we have 5 more inches predicted for today.

Sooo very funny! After my last response the mail carrier came by and you would never guess they dropped off a Jung Seed catalog in my mailbox. :lau:lau:lau:lau
