What did you do in the garden today?

Edited: trying to get a photo to load. Edited again: I give up. Will try later! Edited again: Karen, I see you already built you cucumber trellis! But I persist!

Here’s the aforementioned ladder and a sample from the raised beds. It’s crowded (on purpose) but things are growing very well.

That ladder is nothing to write home about! It should be much bigger. Scrap wood and essentially a wood shop project for me, learning to use a chop saw and self-tapping screws.

Can you show me/us a picture of your ladder for the cucumbers. I would like to see what you did! Thanks!

My tomato love fish fertilizer smells awful but works

Yes, I’ve used this type. This year, I used “Alaska” brand fish based fertilizer specifically for tomatoes. It came in pellet form, add to planting hole. Then can side dress later in season. All others doing well (except the curled leaf tomato -but, it has tomatoes). So, I’ll try to top dress today. Another scorcher, though.

Good morning gardeners. Running late on everything today. I watched the 4th of July celebration in Boston on TV. This was the first year I remember they actually showed the whole thing. It was a really good show. But I stayed up past my bedtime and actually slept in an extra 20 minutes. Cleaned the chicken coop, picked peas and a few turnips. The turnips are really small but one of them was starting to flower so I picked it. After near 90F yesterday again the garden definitely needs water. My jalapenos are developing nicely and my yellow squash plant is loaded with flowers so that's exciting. I'll have to pick all the lettuce soon I'm sure, but I remembered I bought a juicer a few months ago so I can turn some of it into juice. I have a salad nearly everyday and I'm starting to get a little burnt out on it. The peas are still going strong and I really need to start freezing them as well as the turnip greens. I mowed the front yard yesterday. It's much easier to mow with that sickly rhododendron gone. The temps are going to be around 90F again today but the humidity is supposed to skyrocket. Have a great day everyone and stay cool and bug/spider free!

That looks so neat and tidy. I'm seriously jealous. After all the mulch I put between my raised beds, I still have weeds popping through. I'm a little concerned about flying mulch if I take my weed whacker to it. LOL!

I just finished giving the garden a drink. I noticed that I have a small yellow squash and some tiny tomatoes growing. My jalapeno has several mini peppers with one already 2 inches long. @Acre4Me, are your green beans the bush variety? I know they come in earlier than the pole beans. My pole beans/green beans are doing much better now and are about 2 1/2 feet up the pole. I don't expect them to be ready to harvest for quite awhile.

Yes, green beans are the bush type. I planted two types, and one produced green beans more quickly. Last year I grew them in containers on my deck with great success!

My other bush beans, and my pole beans are for drying, so it will be quite awhile for them. My bush drying beans have flowered and have pods at various stages -all green, of course. The pole beans have a few flowers, and are steadily climbing, but no pods yet. I put up a 6+ ft structure for them with twine, and several are at least halfway up the twine.

I made 5 foot “tee pee” type towers out of bamboo for mine. I used to do only bush variety because they tasted better, but this variety of pole beans are the same I grew last year and they are quite tasty and have a good texture when cooked. They froze really well too.

Slow and steady rain since 5am. It's welcome. For all of the rain we've had, it's been 8 days since rain fell from the sky. So we should be good on watering for a few days.

Tomatoes are starting to perk up since we've been in the 70s at night, which is what they want.

Raccoon babies left the tree late last night.

I spent the morning yesterday trimming trees. (Yes again!)
I will let them be until winter and saw the last limbs I want off.
There was allot of blind spots I just didn’t like. The tree by the run had branches laying on top of it. That whole corner had to be thinned out. It still has a nice canopy for shade but now the chickens and I have a better view of the horizon.
Much safer even if it’s not so pretty. We can see across the canyon. Face it I built the perfect perch for hawks ... all around my yard.
Last night I stayed out until 9:30 of course I had to make sure my girls didn’t freak out over the fireworks lol.
Tried a experiment. A friend recommended I try Vic’s for a bug repellent. I got a generic “Medicated Chest Rub” at the dollar store.
It WORKED ~ :wee
Hubby had to go in at dusk he just couldn’t stand it.
Me? One tiny bite behind my ear. Rubbed my arms & legs and a smear across my forehead. The dirt of course stuck to it but Oh Well.
Took a shower and my skin feels great, soft in fact.
I’ve used Deep Woods Off wipes before. My skin screamed NO!
Have a great day Gardeners :frow
