What did you do in the garden today?

I checked to see how much of my turnips were eaten by the elk last night... Buggers are visiting every night now and eat about two square feet of leaves down to the stalks each visit.

They also somehow manage to reach my young potato plants six feet in from the fence as well, never had trouble with things eating my potato plants down before. Thankfully all of my first two plantings of potatoes are a good 3 feet tall and flowering now and they seem to be leaving those alone. I also had to stop and admire my dozens of young bottle neck squash and the several dozen black beauty zucchini. Still waiting for my cucumbers to come back enough to flower after my goat got into my garden and ate most of them down to the stalks. They are all leafed out pretty well again now, should flower soon I hope.

Have you considered a HOT WIRE to keep the predators out of your garden?:idunno

I have tried hot wires many times, but it really doesn't seem to have an effect on the elk or moose and certainly has no effect on my goats, other than to propel them through the fence a greater rate of speed. This fence is tall enough to keep the goats out and the elk and moose can only reach so far. I will go ahead and raise the fence height to 6 or 7 feet this fall and that will stop the elk and moose next year.

It was mostly a test garden, the area has always been too wet due to my dam above it having a slow leak and draining water through that area until about July each year. So this year I came up with the idea of digging ditches and planting in raised rows with boxes around them. Turns out, it worked quite well. Now to finish all the boxes and raise the fence height this fall for next year and I will have a pretty bullet proof 2,000 sq foot garden.

Quite the rainstorm this afternoon. Lots of rain in a short period of time. Temps dropped about 20 degrees, so the heat wave is put off till tomorrow.

Just picked up the little chicks and the momma hen is in the brooder sitting on fake eggs. We will tuck the chicks under her tonight when it is dark.

Here they are:

Heat index just hit 117 degrees. Tomorrow will be even hotter.:th

Yeahhh.... no thanks... Currently 67 here and will get down to a comfy 44 tonight... It should cool off a bit tomorrow and be a bit more comfortable, though I can't complain about 67, a bit warm but quite livable... 117 that is hell on earth, I haven't seen temps like that since I was in the Persian gulf, and hopefully I never see them again.
