What did you do in the garden today?

Potato question:

I'm growing potatoes for the first time. They haven't bloomed, and are looking a bit yellowed With our infrequent but intense deluges, they go from too wet to too dry in their containers; I'm trying to keep them even. There are little red potatoes peeking above the soil (maybe 1 1/2" in diameter). I cover them and wonder what to do next. Do I dig up some tiny reds? Wait? When will I know, and how?

Corn update:

The corn has developed tassels. It is planted very closely, because of being in a raised bed. Should I try to hand-pollinate? I mean close, like two rows, 6 inches apart, 8" between plants. Tall and healthy! Advice?

That little lemon cuke is adorable!

Yes. You can take and eat the tiny reds. Otherwise, cover them with dirt so they don't get sunburned and harvest when they're fully grown after all the foliage has yellowed and totally died off. TOTALLY dead greenery. :D ENJOY.

Your corn is fine. Bugs, flies, wind and banging together will pollinate. Watch for corn worm in the tassels.

My pole beans still have no blooms or anything that even looks like it will be a bloom yet! What type of bean are the black and white beans?

I think the b/w beans are “calypso”. Need to check my garden notebook to be sure (and I left it in the barn, of course). I also planted a black bean for drying and the pole beans are also for drying, but I haven’t harvested either yet.

Went out to check the garden and pick the 2-3 zucchini I knew were getting big, to dehydrate them. Well!
Baby green beans are appearing on the bush!

If that weren’t exhausting enough, I spent over an hour picking Japanese beetles off the roses, cosmos, zinnias, and wild geranium and feeding them to the chickens. This was fun! DH is a little upset that I am retired and he is working. The beetle thing really got to him.

I bought some Japanese beetle traps that use pheromones for bait. Then I dump the beetles into the chicken coop for the chickens to have a feast!
I wished you lived near me, my zucchini hasn't produced at all. :he
I did get a big bowl of green beans from the bush beans when I got back from vacation and 1 cucumber. Something has been feasting on my tomatoes, and it hasn't been me. :( I'm guessing chipmunks or mice or squirrels. It has to be something small to be able to fit through the fence. I think next year I will add hardware cloth around the bottom 3 feet or so. But I think all 3 of those critters climb well enough that the hardware cloth won't help. Maybe I need to get a hot wire.:idunno

It can be any of those, but by me we only have Squirrels, and they have been munching on neighbors tomatoes. My toms are not producing yet. (planted late). Half eaten green tomatoes in my Lawn/Yard. :(
BTW,,, did you enjoy your vacation?. :highfive: Did caretakers take good care of your garden in your absence?

ETA.. the Tomcat Repellent may work for you. It kept the squirrels out of my flower post after I treated the pots with granules on surface of soil. It is also water resistant unlike the other, Critter Ridder, which needs to be reapplied after rain.

Good morning gardeners. I am so glad the heat wave broke and I am enjoying more normal summertime temps. Right now there is a gentle shower. Enough to give the garden a drink and wash down the dust. I have several small tomatoes halfway ripened so that is good news. I saw another tiny baby butternut squash this morning so I'm hoping the frost holds off until the squash are mature. My pole beans aren't blooming yet, but they are getting that "look" they get before they start sprouting blooms. I agree with @cavemanrich regarding the Tomcat repellent. I put 18 inches high plastic fence at the bottom of my regular garden fence and watched as the chipmunks just daintily climbed up and over it. Very cute little critters. It's good to know that most of your gardens are doing well. Have a great day.
