What did you do in the garden today?

@Wee Farmer Sarah what do you do with your dried mint?

I picked 2 small red bell peppers the only 2 I got( well there is a 3rd one still on the plant) all Summer.:he I picked about a half pound of green beans and about 10 cherry tomatoes. Pulled up most of the green pepper plants and tossed them to the chickens.
I was surprised to get that many green beans!

Good morning gardeners. This morning it was 30 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. It was rainy and windy overnight, however there is supposed to be a break in the rain early today so I may be able to get a little accomplished in the garden. For those of you who don't already grow your own herbs, I highly recommend it. After drying my own herbs they are so much more flavorful than what you buy at the grocery store. As for dried mint @karenerwin, I like to have it on hand for the occasional recipe that calls for mint. I have a few recipes for middle eastern food that use mint. You can also make a mint tea with the dried leaves. And best of all, mice hate mint. I like to sprinkle it around the shelves I keep my canned goods on in the basement. Best of luck with fall cleanup everyone and have a great day.

Nebraska field mice love mint. They chew through plastic to get at and eat mint horse treats, chew through lids to get at natural mint mouse repellent sprays. And when I found a mouse nest this spring, it had a mint sachet in it that we bought for use in the engine compartment of the tractor that was supposed to keep mice away. ( sachet went missing) found it!

But all that mint around does smell good!

Garden totally empty this morning. Sigh.

Will finish winterizing coop today and drying apples.

Your Halloween contest sounds fun, Penny1960, but there's no way that my chickens are going to allow me to put a costume on them - lol. Although I do look forward to seeing pics from people who have more cooperative chickens than I do.
Well, I just started my 4-day "weekend" after working the last 3 days. I need to decide on an automatic chicken door for the ladies, to use for the 3 days that I work (I leave when it's still dark out, and soon it will be dark before I get home). I also need to check on the few crops that are still growing. We haven't had a frost here yet, but sounds like we may get one next weekend. I need to make a spot to put a few pots of herbs that I want to bring inside before then. There's lots of other things I need to do during my 4 days off - just need to prioritize them a little first.
Hope you all have a great day!

Different species. Eastern mice don’t like mint at all. You can get packets of mint from hardware stores to deter mice without using poison.

Ya. They tried selling that Grandpa mouse stuff here. It was all clearanced out. We have to trap trap trap trap. This year has been ridiculous.

halfway done with the chicken run. 9 LARGE contractor wheelbarrows full and out. I bet I have that many in the other half of the run. PHEW

Then I'll put up the winter walls.

YUP 16 heaping contractor sized wheel barrows of black dirt, fluffy dirt and pulverized shavings and what not in the two runs. I also found a spot that had been compacted so tightly where we walk in and out that a mouse was able to carve out a cave and make a nest. When I turned the soil, up popped momma and 5 babys. So 6 running chicken snacks.

You'd think they'd never been fed before or hadn't been out free ranging for 7 hours already.

I'll let the soil settle and the girls dig for a couple of days before I add a bag of pine shavings.

Already thinking about next years veg garden. It will be all tomatoes and more of those San Mars. paste tomatoes.
