What did you do in the garden today?

Way more than I did! I had good intentions to re pressurize the tank for our well water yesterday but my DH got that nasty flu that has been going around for months (even with his flu shot). I have an earache, so we are sleeping and watching movies while my tomato plants wilt and the chickens dig through the pile of leaves I raked this morning. Oh the gilt!!!

Good morning gardeners. Still enjoying above freezing temperatures but the wind is wicked bad. We got about 1.5 inches of rain and with the rapid snow melt - water everywhere. The sump pump is working so no flooding in the basement. I did some searching and found out that this little Meyer Lemon tree can take anywhere from 4 to 9 months for the fruit to ripen. So I'll let it be for now. I would really like to get a mandarin orange tree to go with it. If for nothing else, they smell really good. I got started on my garden planning for the Spring. Since I have the material on hand I'm going to try the hoop garden thing and plant early lettuce, broccoli, radishes and chard in one bed then plant turnips in another smaller one. I'm going to try planting the bell peppers in containers this year near the herb garden expansion. At least now I've got a better idea of what seeds I need to purchase. The feathers on my molting hens are coming in nicely, but Suzy Q is still not all that strong. I make sure she gets extra protein everyday and I'm checking her crop to make sure she is eating. I'm hoping she gets stronger before this coming Thursday when the daytime high is forecasted to be 17F. The good news it will be sunny so that's helpful. Stay warm and have a great day everyone!

OOOH! Garden planning!

I need to get my notebook ready with the garden plots drawn out. last year we had 5.5 raised beds....the 5 raised beds were 4'x16', and the 0.5 bed was 4'x4'. We've added tons of dirt (literally) and moved the beds around. Now spouse is willing to add about 6 MORE raised beds. Some will be 16', some will be half that. But, now we have 2 raised beds in an area that remains sunny from sunrise to sunset, whereas the others will all be impacted by the giant Maple tree at some point in the day...but the earliest they get shaded is 4pm and later, so still a lot of sunlight for all beds! Also, we have the option of making a meat bird grow out pen, in an area that used to have raised beds...but that area got shaded the earliest in the day, so we nixed raised beds there. But now have to come up with a plan for a structure for the meat birds....they need shade AND lots of ventilation, so a roof/cover of some kind will be required.

Thanks @ValerieJ that is great to hear! I was really disappointed that, after the summer off, they still had low to no eggs and were possibly going to be just loud, bossy, hungry & pooping yard pets. With that said... 2 BO's made it into the boxes this morning!!! Yippity skippity! I hope they left me something.

My garden day was pretty easy. I watched DW expand beds on the east side of our porch/carport structure. Then chased down fencing posts(one is an actual t-bar post, rebar and hollow aluminum pipes) for her for the chicken exclusion zones. Rolled out about 12 feet of 4' chicken wire. Have to put that stuff on my shopping list for the feed run next month as the bed is 16x5', but we have oodles of temporary seedling protector thingies we have improvized that will work for the short term. There is going to be another pineapple drag for us tomorrow night(mon night until thurs afternoon) but it wont be as severe as they usually are thankfully.

Just made way too many cookies today 3 make like 8 batches of cookie this year
worn out got coops cleaned bought alfalfa for the birds but got so tied up in cookies was late cleaning the coops so just layed it down have at girls

I finished setting up the loom and have the dish towels started.

I have dough disks for 6 dozen sugar cookies in the refrigerator. I'll tackle them tomorrow and get them delivered. (If I can stay out of them.)

No garden/yard stuff today. SO Cold.

We went out around 11 to try to get some things done before the snow started at noon. We would have made it but we decided to stop and eat at the Chinese buffet. It started snowing right as we pulled in. When we left 45 minutes or so later, we just about got stuck! Well, I guess we did get stuck but we also got unstuck!
The tires on my car have had lousy traction since I bought them new!
We did finally make it home but we were unable to make it up our long driveway, so we had to leave the car at the bottom and walk up.
I made 4 batches of Apple Pie jam ( I only get 2 or 3 half pints per batch so I have to make several to get anywhere. Now I have a dozen fresh jars!
They have already canceled school for tomorrow because we are supposed to be getting ice in the morning and then more snow in the afternoon and evening.
I think I will make mosaic cookies if I have a full bag of colored miniature marshmallows.
I'll check the pantry tomorrow.
