What did you do in the garden today?

@karenerwin I’m so sorry about your cat I hope it turns out okay!! Animals are so expensive 😂 but we all sure do seem to love them!! I just got a kitten named her Kruger about a month ago she was sick when I rescued her had a pretty bad uri...she’s a bundle of crazy kitten now and her name suits her well!!

@Farmdog267 I too had a huge garden with well water and lots of produce and fruit..it’s going to be quite a change not to mention challenge to cut down and figure out how to utilize my areas to my best ability..I think I’m gonna do at least a couple raised beds along with a nice little plot as big as I can practically manage and still give ample room for chickens..but I’ll figure it out and I HAVE to keep my chickens to a 6/8 limit which is going to be hard 19 to 6 lol...

Good morning gardeners. So sorry about your cat @karenerwin. Sunny with above freezing temps for now. Snow coming in tonight. Maybe two inches. Not enough for the snow blower. Regarding your small space for your garden @AngieMaesChix, to maximize small garden plots, go vertical. I've grown tomatoes in those Topsie Turvy planting bags and they did well. I grow peppers in pots in my front yard where the sun is the best. I plan on planting the okra in the front yard this year because the flowers are lovely and my neighbors won't know what they are. I know the other gardeners here can give you some more ideas on maximizing your garden space.

I can relate to the struggle. I was living out more in the country on about an acre and due to some land lord issues, ended up moving mid season to an apartment. Lost my 2 chickens which made the move in a doghouse from the suburbs to the country. I hope to have chickens again in the next couple of years. Last year was the first spring and summer in our new home (a twin home in the suburbs on a 5000 square foot lot.) My wife and I put a new raised bed garden in which is just about 300 or so square feet and gonna be getting made larger in the next couple of weeks if weather permits.

As luck would have it, while walking our dogs last summer, in our neighborhood (entirely twin homes) a neighbor's 2 chickens escaped from the back yard and were free ranging in the front yard. I saw them and so did my wife and my wife hates that I was witness to this meaning there is actually a shot for having chickens in our neighborhood. We still see them in the back yard sometimes if they are out and about but I don't think I have ever heard any of the cackling or egg songs from them. 1 is a buff orpington, not sure what the other breed is.

You'll get it done and make it work even on the smaller scale! Gotta enjoy the sweat equity the process includes; its all worth it at the end of the day!

Anybody else have (or going to have when the weather breaks) a garden that 1000+ sqft? I'm looking at the garden plan I've been working on and realizing it's going to be A LOT of work. I'm hoping we get A LOT of produce from it though. I will definitely have to mulch this year because there's no way I can maintain weeding the entire garden every weekend without mulch and even weed cloth assisting me in keeping the weeds in check.

Yes, This year we will have a much larger garden. We brought in "garden soil" by the truckload (about 20 yards, I guess), and spread it out to an approx 20'x30' bed. Added shredded leaves to it to compost over the winter. We will till everything up in that bed in the spring. Am guessing we will add some bagged soil to the plating holes since our compost won't be really ready by spring.

We also have 10 raised beds. Five are 16'x4', four are 12'x4' (maybe 10' rather than 12' - lol, can't remember!), and one bed 8'x4'. We may need to buy some dirt to add to the raised beds, but still figuring that out.

When we brought in 102 tons of dirt to level out the back yard, we obviously tore up the grass, so we ended up just making the area behind the barn (including the chicken run) into a mulched area rather than grass.

Here's the plant list. It's nearly finished. There's some "?" because I have not purchased all the seeds just yet. Also, most things will not have a second variety so there's plenty of blanks in that row of my chart.

Is this also the layout for the square foot garden?
