What did you do in the garden today?

We had a lot of 'spring cleaning' on the schedule today, but I was able to get outside for a while. Supposed to drizzle tonight and showers tomorrow. As my optimistic daughter always reminds me...April showers bring May flowers 🌺 🌼💐

So now I have a batch of eggs on the stove for us to dye. Doggy is happy and waiting by the pot because he knows he'll get some 'bad' ones out :bowof the batch :lau

And I received some of my seeds today! The packaging was stella and they sent me a little starter handbook too. Weather permitting, guess what I'm doing tomorrow??

I also planted cosmos, burdock, and some seeds that mom said are from her brown sunflowers? No idea. I don't care. Love getting seeds in the mail :bow

Experiment. I'm trying this with some strawberries that I bought from the store: Step 3 of Part 1. Will move on to Part 2 (germination) after the strips are dry and seeds come loose.

I wish everyone a most blessed & wonderful Easter holiday! Don't forget to decorate and hide our girls' eggs!!!

Didn't do anything in the garden today. Had problems with a cockerel. Heavy breathing and a cough. Never dealt with this sort of thing. He is separated now and seems improved but I don't know what is going on. Hoping all my chicks don't get sick now. 😞 (If anyone is good with diagnosis you could take a look at my other thread, it has more details. I got no answers from anyone.)

Some seedlings are coming up now. Got 4 flats started yesterday. Sunflowers (a pollenless cutter and teddy bear), marigolds, purple hyacinth bean vine, scarlet runners, china aster, black swan poppy, and a giant marigold that looks like an aster. Got 4 more flats to fill. Might try to start some perennials to fill out some of my beds.

Does anyone have any good methods for preventing powdery mildew? It is my nemesis and I would like to thwart it this year. I intend to plant a bunch of pumpkins and I will need some tips! Thanks everyone. Love reading about what you all are up to. Giving me some good inspiration!

Finally got the sod all removed now that I've had some help

The left is where we removed the sod and the right is where the existing garden was. If it wasnt supposed to rain/snow/grapple the next few days I would till it up.
I planted lavender yesterday because I read about it being a natural antiseptic with a variety of uses including cleaning products. I've never grown it before so we shall see how she does
I'm just tilling through the sod in our garden expansion. It's what I did before and worked well. I'll till a few times before planting.
Also, I should mention that I fixed my tiller today. I had to replace the engine. Only 2 uses and the motor capped out - a broken connector rod and piston. I picked up a predator motor from harbor freight and mounted it with minimal modification required. I still need ti get another lever and cable since this motor has a brake bar (like the handle you hold down in a lawn mower). The original design didn't have this so I used a piece of wire to hold the brake lever switch open today, but had to cut it to turn if the motor. Other than that, it looks and runs good as new.

I’ve heard it mentioned before I think but never done it. Sounds interesting.
We pickled zucchini at our old house. It was really good actually. The large zucchini made pickled chips large enough to cover a burger! I also made zucchini relish. That was really good too. I'm hoping to pickle contractors again this year and also have a variety of seeds just for pickling. We are growing banana peppers to pickle too.

Hmmm. Its wise that you separated him. It could be upper-respiratory? I am no vet but this has helped us in the past: https://www.dummies.com/home-garden/hobby-farming/raising-chickens/respiratory-illness-in-chickens/

I've also regulated some to the indoors. I.e. have provided a sauna-type environment (think bathroom closed up; steaming coming from shower) then wrap and bring to an area of a comparable degree and ensure he/she is hydrated. It seems to alleviate the wheezing, coughing, sneezing, etc. I hope all turns out OK!

^This is an eggscelent question! I tend to battle with this too!

Oh wow that sounds delicious!!! I never would have even thought to pickle all this stuff haha

Got my onions and lettuce planted today and I’m hoping to get the garden ready soon so I can plant the peas.

Might also start the carrots or beets today or start the squash and cucumbers early but not sure yet.

Also.... I can’t wait to make pickles this year 😂

I wanted to last year especially since we had sooooo many cucumbers but then I never did.

Definitely going to this time though. I have a special pickling kind. :D

I really wanna make bread & butter ones..... my favorites. :D :love

Bread and butter are my favorite too!

I'm sorry about your cockerel, I hope everyone is ok!
Neem oil is supposed to help with powdery mildew.

Believe it or not I think I’ve read milk is supposed to help with it. You mix the milk with water into a spray but I’m not sure on the exact details of it. Baking soda is another one.
