What did you do in the garden today?

I managed to get one good picture! It took me a bit, but these three little dots on my finger are individual flies.

Are they really that small? I understand that the larvae can damage plants but it doesn't seem like they have. Should I spray all of the plants anyways?

Here are some more pictures. It will be a huge garden this summer. We just downed the last tree in the new outdoor garden space yesterday. Now just to till and clear the weeds!

All of the plants.

Happy melons.

Beans needed some support, so I put stakes in them today. They are growing fast!

Zucchini is doing well, it has the biggest leaves of all the plants so far.

Our cucumbers sprouted within a matter of 5 days and have been growing really well.

Corn is finally getting going!

Teeny tiny peppers.

For some reason, little tiny Basil sprouts always make me nostalgic. Not that we grew a lot of it growing up, it just reminds me of little clover weeds in the garden growing up. I think they're "cute" little plants.

Look at all the work you have done!
Are you using bamboo skewers as support stakes? That's a good idea.

I put on my glasses and everything- and I could not identify your fly.
I will ask my husband... Thrips are small and bite... but they are brownish.

I'm not sure that they are bamboo, we just had some leftover BBQ skewers that we only rarely use so I thought I'd put them to good use. It was originally a package of about 50, and they are wooden but I think they might be just pine. I had a lightbulb moment last night after I cleaned the kitchen and saw them, as I had been contemplating how to support the beans.

They definitely aren't biting, so perhaps they are just fungus gnats.

Spraying the soil won't affect fungus gnats. The adults will just fly away. What you need is something to get the larvae. I'll check one of my books: Can't find the book right now, but I'll be on the look out for it. I don't think they're much of a problem, other than the fact that they love to fly up your nose.

We just set out some Oriental lilies, some Asiatic lilies, and some gladiolas.

Had to put chicken wire over them to keep the chickens out. Nothin to see yet.

took these yesterday.... i got a better picture of the juneberry flower I will post later and some random flowers we found while we were clearing..trying to clear our spring.

my random carrot I found.. little finger i think

my cherry tree getting its little leaves

One of the peas I have growing

some strawberries either comet strawberries ---- or Arkansas King or possibly ozark beauty lol I have all three in the same area

these are my white strawberries they are called White D.. it took me some searching to find the name, they arnt your normal pineberries they are actually white strawberries that were found growing in a strawberry patch in Switzerland in the 40's , the usda got them in the 90's and i requested some and got the smallest weakest looking plant at the very end of the season last year, it only grew 4 or 5 leaves and they all died off during the winter. It looks like its going to be ok this is what they are supposed to look like fra1027.001.white.d.fruit01.2011.jpg

Pictures of turnips that overwintered . I suspect these are purple top x Shogun . Shogun will overwinter here but purple top does not . Been trying to let them to hybridize naturally . These have purple tops and survived . Shogun is too strong flavored for my taste . The dead one is for comparison . I like saving my own seed . I can select for traits I like .
