What did you do in the garden today?

That's how I get my wood chips too @TropicalBabies, I'm on my 3rd load this year (I think we had 5 or 6 last year). Thankfully we have a couple of tractors to move it around. So I decided to go for it & put 2 tractor bucket load in the run for the girls to spread. I figure I'll do 2 buckets a week till I'm happy. I don't want to go too thick, just enough to keep the dust & mud down. It's not aged yet either so I don't want to do too much at once & overwhelm the girls.

@nao57 I wish I could plant but it's too cold, had snow on the ground this am! Nothing grows till the soil's warm. I used to put wood chips in the small run & clean it out twice a year, & I only cleaned it because I wanted it for the compost pile! I never plan on cleaning the big run out. It's also covered with bird netting & shaded by a giant old oak & 5 evergreens of some type. Only one small end gets sun so that's not a concern for me.

It turned out to be a relatively nice day. Got the roost up, chips in the run, I have some squash starting to peek through the soil (so the straw helped with the snow) - yay! & it seems my asclepias survived the cold too!

It’s nice and sunny here as well, but still windy. I’m trying to catch up on housework before I bundle up to sit with the chickens. Perhaps I can get to the weed whacking tomorrow. It’s a good thing I’m not type A!

Today I need to add another roost for the littles in the big girls coop. Hopefully next weekend they can move in. I think I'll just grab them off their roost & put em in with the big girls at night, is that how I should do it?
No expert here, but my understanding is to introduce new birds you need to cage them in the same area as the established birds for a week or two so they get used to seeing each other in their territory. Ours we all chicks of four and two weeks so I only kept them that was for about a week and then watched them interact.
I'm debating on wether or not I should start adding wood chip mulch to the chicken run. It's 1600 sf or so for 6 birds. I'm thinking this summer it's just going to get super dusty & then just muddy when it rains, there is already nothing growing in there & I don't see that chaning. Unfortunate part is the tractor doesn't fit in the gate & under the bird netting so I have to dump it in a wheelbarrow at the gate & move it from there. Not really a big deal tho. Think I should?
That's what I'll be doing as the green stuff in my chicken run gets eaten down. I have a nice aged pile of chips and chunks right next to my run.

So @NewBoots, is this your first time planting the Martha Washington asparagus? I'm curious because that is what I got at HD. These are female plants and are supposed to produce the thinner stalks rather then the large stalks. I'm just hoping they do all right.
First time ever planting asparagus so it's all learning curve for me. I've also got a few seedlings of another way slower to sprout type that I'll be planting in a separate bed. I'll have a look and post the name.

Overcast and warm today, had a lovely garden get together (6' spacing) this morning so garden got little care. Going out now to clean poop-boards and get busy in the garden. Supposed to rain tomorrow and continue for days so hopefully the rain barrels will get a refill.

Edited cuz doofus

They are in the run together & have been for almost 2 weeks, they just go to separate coops at night. & it's getting old, lol. I just have 1 mean girl. Glad you could have a get together today!

Windy as all get out. Another night of near freezing ahead of us. Down to 35 last night. We'll see. Nothing I can do about the orchard, it's just going to have to be what is.

Have sewn 1 and a half historic skirts. I could have finished the second, but I felt myself getting stupid. THese are linen and mistakes are not forgiving. So better to stop whilst I'm ahead.

I have the one to finish and one full one left to do. I'll be glad to be finished. I really want to get back to the stead thumb swish of my loom.

Sunny and 60F then the storm clouds moved through, high winds, rain, and even hail! More rain tonight. Supposed to be 33F tonight and 31F Monday night...<sigh> Starting Wed, there will be 6 days of rain and thunderstorms. So...,current planting schedule pushed to around May 19 or later.

the freeze down to 25F the other night made the potatoes unhappy. We covered the leaveswith dirt but they were pretty pathetic and limp in the morning. Will have to see what becomes of them. Might need to get more potatoes, but I hope not.

getting my incubator ready for its first run. Hope to add eggs Monday or Tuesday. it will be interesting!

I am sorry but what incubator did you buy @Acre4Me you may have said
but cannot recall

the still-air little giant incubator From TSC (no turning tray). It was $49. It is a step up from my homemade lightbulb-heated, still-air, styrofoam-cooler incubator!.

I thought about getting a different one, but all needed to be shipped. I figured this is a good learning one and can hold 40+ eggs (no turner). I can buy a turner and a fan that works with it if I want for a future hatch. It is holding temp well, it’s been on for 4 days and tonight will add water to asses the humidity aspect (no eggs yet). Need to get some charts ready for weights and figure out my codes and marking/data rubric. Since it’s a learning bater, I’ll try to learn me real good! Lol.

let’s hope for no exploding eggs!
