What did you do in the garden today?

hello everyone ,i haven't posted for a long time been lurking though .i lost my chickens last year so decided no more ,been redoing my whole garden mostly flowers shrubs for pollinaters etc but now got the urge to grow my own veg again ,(used to years ago) .i,ve planted some potatoes that were sprouting in the cupboard then some old runner bean seeds that were out of date (they are growing well )my neighbour gave me some toms 31 plants in the tray.i,ve never grown toms outside before .i,m growing herbs on kitchen windowsill but i,ve just finished a plot outside to make into herb garden .got spring onions in a container that i thought lost ,the day i planted them it poured down never stopped for a month. i will post photos when i learn how i,m not technically minded .got the urge to get more chickens but impossible here just now so i,ll just get new coop and create new area for them and wait .

@TropicalBabies sorry it has you a little stressed out, both COVID & what to do with the birds. I wish COVID would just go away already. We had to postpone our trip to Scotland in May & now we aren't sure we're going to make it in Sept. We are going to lose a lot of money if we have to cancel.

@NewBoots I can't believe raccoons took out your little dog, how awful! I've never grown okra, but maybe you could pollinate with a qtip. That's how I do my squash. Speaking of, I have a bunch of female flowers open this am & no boy flowers. I've never seen that, it's always the other way around at first. (lol, just saw @karenerwin post - opposite issue! We need to get our squashes together!)

3 days over 90 & humid so far, 3 more to go so I HAD to do something for my poor bean plants so I used some surgical table cover stuff we had as a shade cloth. I hope it helps. Looks kind of silly, but I don't care as long as my beans live!

I hope everyone has a great day.

@karenerwin and @Sueby ...I’m having squash flower issues too! My butternut squash is producing tons of females, but rarely a male flower. I’ll usually pluck the male flower, peel off the petals and pollinate the female flowers that are open. Blades of grass work too, they hold a lot of pollen it seems. And Qtips are also a good option!

Funny we're all having the same, or opposite, squash probs. I just want to eat squash, it's so frustrating to be so close & there is nothing I can do. The unfertilized squash are already 3 inches long! I thought about asking the neighbor if she has any male blossoms. :gig

@Acre4Me Hopefully you can get the other 2 tonight & get rid of the little murderers, lol.

I just finished watering the garden & I'm sweating, it's 9am! I mixed up some save a chick for the girls too. Poor things. I'll put out a block of ice in a couple hours too.

Good morning gardeners. I think we are getting a bit of a break from the heat. The high is forecasted to be 85F. There was a fog this morning followed by a heavy dew and it felt quite refreshing. I still plan on watering the garden anyway. I didn't get a chance to dead head the roses yesterday because of the blistering heat. Welcome to the garden thread @alfie10. What part of the country are you in so we'll know which garden zone you are in. Great photos @TropicalBabies. Sorry about your dilemma with the chickens. Good luck with that. Love the picture of the okra flower @NewBoots. My okra plants are doing OK, however they are not big enough to set flowers yet. Your garden looks great @karenerwin. I'm glad you were able to offer some info @WthrLady regarding the electric fence for @Acre4Me. I have never used it so I have nothing on that topic. Several days ago I noticed some grass seed heads forming in my backyard so I decided to hold off on mowing for a while. I'll try to make it to the end of this week before I cut it back. I hope it works on the lawn. I wouldn't worry about what your shade cloth looks like @Sueby. As long as it works, then it is appropriate. I have two very nice heads of Romaine lettuce forming and the cabbage is doing well under my old bed sheet. And that makes me happy. I hope you or your neighbor can capture the momma raccoon @Acre4 Me. I'm sure the worrying is stressful. I'll be munching on fresh peas soon. Yay! I discovered young peas forming yesterday. Have a great day everyone.

That’s nice to know regarding your location. You may have noticed from previous posts that we truly enjoy hearing from gardeners from diverse locations. If we could, I would gladly swap some of the heat here for your rain. Best of luck with your garden.
