What did you do in the garden today?

Cooler weather and a bit rainy.

We decided we wanted to get rid of one rooster, but wanted to try a few new breeds. We just ordered 15 chicks across 7 breeds - all males! We saw the cooler weather for next week and decided we could risk the shipping, plus we paid extra for Expedited shipping, so hoping for 1 day - however, USPS does not guarantee a timeframe with expedited live chicks. Obviously we won't be keeping all of these males. Also, basically, the hatchery was all sold out of everything BUT males for next week, so good thing we wanted males. Even the assortments of layers were sold out. Always fun to try something new. We haven't had any of these breeds before.

Havent gone out to the garden yet - had a doctor appointment this morning.

Went out expecting to have a tomato sandwich for lunch and....another squirrel attack. Little booger took a nice big chunk out of the only ripe tomato i had. So, the girls got to have tomato for lunch 🐓. Mixed up some pepper/garlic spay and sprayed the tomato plants and picked a cuke. Very sad about my lunch...egg n cheese burrito instead.

Years ago...my first garden in an old established neighborhood (a.k.a. lots of trees). My tomato plants grew well. Then they were nearly ripe, and excitement built up! Went out to get some ripe ones...walked all the way to the garden, reached down to pick the first one - it looked beautiful! Then, utter disappointment! It was a hollowed out shell of a tomato....the *%$#! squirrels had eaten all but the outer sides facing the house. All the tomatoes were like that. Like they KNEW we approached from that side and would not expect anything until we tried to pick the tomato. Stupid rodents with tails.
I sympathize with you.

I did a quick taste test of the Carolina Reaper broth, its hot but not so hot I won't be able to eat any thing cooked with it. I already started crock potting the beans I made the broth for. Looks like it should work out and I found a use for Carolina Reapers. I have a Carolina Reaper and a Ghost Pepper plant and a 4 week window to process about 15 CX (currently on Week 6). Every time a pepper ripens I am processing a chicken, I will either make broth that night or I will freeze the bone carcass with the pepper and make the bone broth as I need it.

I picked about 12 pepperchinis and baked them with some Swiss Chard stems (not from garden but I am growing it this fall, seeds sowed yesterday). I planted a couple more Onion ends, every time I cut up Onions I put the ends in the ground now. When I buy Onions in a bag I pick the bags with more smaller onions now so I have more ends to plant. I also buy smaller Box Choy I just buy more of them so I can plant more ends now that I know that trick works. I tried planting Celery the same way last night, I have never heard of that working but I figured if it fails I added something for worms in the garden to eat. I do not particularly like celery, I mean its ok but not very tasty to me however I like making my own broths so Its on the list of things I need to learn how to grow.

Got over my tomato tantrum and went back out to prune, tie up, and check my peppers. 77B346F9-129C-4BEA-AD6E-C10301576F5B.jpeg

Is there anyone else here who hopes to win in the free China seed lotto?
Got to admit I kinda was. Years ago we got some seeds from a Devil's Claw. Interesting plant, Grew tall then flopped down, covering everything beneath it. Had sticky, hairy stems that killed anything aphid sized or slightly larger that landed on it. The whole plant smelled just like male mouse urine. Then the dry seed pods were spikey with 2 huge hooks on the end to latch onto something big and furry. I figure the Chinese Seeds of Doom are like that. Oh, and we pulled up the plants after the pods dried and sold the pods to a herbalist who was thrilled to have them.
I will be using it tomorrow morning to slow cook my dry beans (with tomatoes and peppers) using the same spices used in chili.
I apologize if my comment came out as more insult than friendly joke. I was thinking more of the things I use stock for (gravies and such). A bean soup with a kick to it sounds wonderful.
Ok so the hurricane passed.
So glad you are all still kicking.
So morning all. Hurt my back getting out of bed, now I'm couch bound with the heating pad. :he
So sorry Sueby, hope it feels better soon.
I found 6 green tomatoes with what looked like blossom end rot on them. I picked them and tossed them in the compost pile.
Dang that is so frustrating! All the time and effort into raising the plants and we just have to wait and see.

Watering is done, critters are fed and it's tea time. It looks like I can raise peppers in pots but the only ones that are doing well are the ones in the biggest pots and that are out in the open, not squished in the middle of the deck. None of mine will win any prizes, I think it just isn't hot enough here. Our temperatures are in the high 60s in the days to the low 50s at night. I might have to give up this season and buy my peppers this year. I'll keep trying though.

Good afternoon gardeners. I watered in a hurry this morning so had to go out this afternoon and check on things. One of the elephant ears has some new green sticking out of the ground but the other doesn't; I want to dig that one up and move it but I'm not sure. 2 of the plumbagos have no new growth but the third does, and the potted plants are still alive. It has been too hot to transplant anything this week and it's not looking great for next week either. Hubs told me one of the oleanders is looking droopy so I'll water those and the xeriscape garden this evening at dusk. I still have a ton of hay to spread around but the chickens seem to enjoy rummaging through what's already done. The 2 chicks are still in the brooder but I'm taking them out to play in the mini coop for a couple of hours early in the morning. I need to clean the brooder and they need some space, although it's going to be too hot to take them out permanently yet. I hope it cools off soon, I have 8 Mille Fleur d'Uccle eggs in my incubator 😬 K, gotta run to walmart for bunny greens and I bought a Nintendo Switch to play with hubs. I'm going to kick his butt in Smash Bros, bwahhahaha! Stay healthy and happy.
