What did you do in the garden today?

I tried ginger in a pot but late in the spring. 1 of 3 plants already died (helped by my dogs who broke it). I hope they will grow back.

about a month ago I bought curcuma rhizomes and I hope they will start sprouting as ginger did so that I can plant them as well.
Hopefully they will grow back. I will put some rhizomes back into the pots whem I dig them up in the fall If I have enough. The rest come from HEB. If you are growing the roots from the store, that variety needs to be grown in the shade. The flowering kind needs sun to flower. I have a huge sweet gum tree with the lowest branches about 6' from the ground. They are grown under this tree , get very filtered light and grow great.

I usually start my threads with what i did yesterday or a few days ago. But today Mrs. Lobo and myself dug up this years crop of Ube. This is a sweet tuber some call a potato. Grows underground, is purple skin & flesh and grows in crazy shapes, unlike a potato. Each plant may make 5-10 lbs. She makes cakes, a custard like substance and a jam out of it. Was getting stupid as we were having to dig as much as 3' down to get it. I was about to give up on it due to the heavy clay soil we have here but she got a tip from a friend that the deep stuff is left over tubers in the ground and get deeper each year if you don't get it ALL. Had some very deep holes in the ground today but think we got all the leftovers out. Planting shallow from now on!
As for yesterday. Spent about 2 hrs juicing enough tangerines to fill 6 ice trays and 1/2 gallon of fresh juice for the fridge. Hardly made a dent! We have 2 tangerine trees and have been eating off them for about 1.5 months now. Still have a lot to go. 2 Meyer lemon trees just recently ripening and 2 orange trees that will be ripe very soon. Anybody need some citrus?

Morning all.

Happy winter solstice! Here's to longer days & more eggs!
:wee
I could do with the longer days and more eggs, but I’m not looking forward to summer.
I actually found some commercial eggs that I can live with until the ducks start to lay. I compared the whites and yolks and there was a remarkable difference between a store brand egg and this brand. The cost per dozen is only a little bit more than my cost per dozen with my own flock so now I need to research the brand and see if there’s any dirt on em lol.

a friend of mine made a low frame - sort of low raised bed, filled in with garden top soil and planted sweet potatoes in there. easy to harvest.

would you mind to share the recipe for custard like substance and jam?

I spent about an hour outside with the ducklings this afternoon. I’m beginning to wonder if one might be a drake. Fig is quite a bit bigger than Bean and Pip although you can’t really tell in this pic
