What did you do in the garden today?

All-nighter here...
I need to get off this forum before I get in trouble. I ordered the last of my seeds except for herbs just now. However, I had a coupon for $25 off $50, $50 off $100, or $100 off $200... I feel into a downward spiral. I figured I would splurge and get $100 in my car and just pay $50. The discount didn't account for tax and shipping and it was actually $80. Then I figured I might as well hit $200 in the car to get $100 off. I ended up spending a total of $125...

Their coupon idea really worked out well for them ( and you).

50% off and they're still making a fortune off us

Poor deer. We have one get hit outside the house here about every 10 days -3 weeks. We are infested with deer, which is even more noticeable after a good snow. Trails everywhere.
City people move out here, think they're cute, and feed them, then get pissed when they hit one with their car. :barnie

People do 60 plus on our dark road, so usually I don't have to put anything out of its misery. It's a one and done.

I have some work in the shop today, just for a little bit.
I think I've finalized the look of the green house in my brain. Now I just need to figure out WHERE to put it. Kind of level, out of the way of the sprinkler zone, close to the garden close to the water supply so I can run irrigation. Hmmmmmm. Tricky.

Found a couple little treasures at the thrift shop yesterday; an old heavy chiffon pan and a cookie gun with box and original instructions (I'll squirrel those away those for the Boy), and a bank made from an old PO box front, I love those.

if any of you twitter, I follow a british group that focus' on small places for farmers/ranchers
This next month is US places, and I take over the feed for this ranch at the end of January. Just if you're looking for something else to read. @smallholdersUK This week is a large dairy and egg farm on the CT river in Mass.

OK off to my cup of coffee, and around to do stuff.

Sounds like an easy way to fill the freezer if you get to the deer in a reasonable amount of time. I sure wouldn't complain.
There isn't a whole lot left of a deer that's been hit by a truck/grain hauler going 60 mph. We have a healthy coyote population too.

View attachment 2476327View attachment 2476328This was in our yard this morning. We believe it got hit or clipped by a car. 😞 I did see him try to stand up but he was unable to.
He was still there 7 hours later but he had managed to get himself into the ditch. I called the conservation department and they gave me the number of the agent on duty in my area. He gave me permission to put it out of its misery.
Had an experienced hunter friend come over and gut it for me ( in the dark, by car headlights and flashlights). Tomorrow I will skin it and butcher it. It was a young male. Didn’t even have buttons yet. He did have broken legs and internal damage though. Not sure when it got hit as we didn’t hear anything so it may have been last night.
Picking up the bunnies this week!
Back is doing better. Especially when I can be up and walking/moving around. Sleeping is a different matter. 😞
I wake up because of the pain after about 5 hours. This morning I got up for an hour and a half and walked around. Then was able to sleep another 90 minutes. Next appointment they are going to put me on the back stretcher thing.
I’m so happy your back is feeling better Karen! It really sucks when you hurt all over cuz of that.
Sorry about the deer but at least you’re making use of him :love:hugs
Can’t wait to see your bunnies!!

A quick yet educational read on Jerusalem artichokes / sunchokes: https://joybileefarm.com/grow-sunchokes/

I am going to have to rearrange a few things in the garden plan to dedicate a raised bed to the sunchokes inn the back of the garden. I guess the zucchini well get moved to the ground somewhere and the parsnips in with onions, garlic, carrots and celery. Perhaps I'll actually move the celery to the herb bed and just replace its current pane location with the parsnips... That should do the trick.

Anybody have a perrenial pollinator garden? I don't mind planting a few annual flowers, but I would really like to plant perennial flowers all along the garden feve as a decorative border that would double as a pollinator garden. Any ideas? Also, I would love a perennial that dryers rabbits if such a plant exists. I could mix it in with the pollinator perennials to protect them and the rest of the garden from the rabbits.

I wouldn’t be of any luck for you in the perennial dept, I need desert stuff. Sadly I think everything attracts rabbits though.

@BReeder! I would do that! Lol.
You reminded me that @Wee Farmer Sarah mentioned growing Jerusalem artichokes as well. I know they can be difficult to get rid of if you don’t get all the tubers
I actually want them to come back every year. I just don't want them to spread beyond their boundaries. My raised needs are 2ft tall and 4ftx8ft surrounded by a mulched walking path. I think the 2ft depth should contain the tubers without them getting under the wall of the bed. If seeds fall into the surrounding area from the flowers, they'll be landed in 2-3 inches of mulch and hopefully not take root. If they do, I should be able to weed them before tubers form under the mulch.
