What did you do in the garden today?

@TJAnonymous If you clean the patina off the copper it should keep working? Otherwise, you've just given me an excellent game plan! Thank you!

The neighbors up the street have a German Shepherd that they can't control. Wrong dog, wrong people. Not the dog's fault, but I'm very wary of him and have always been. I had my toddler in the stroller and went for a walk one day when the shepherd broke lead (he's too strong for their teen daughter) and barreled over the lawn at us.

So 60-70 pound dog vs 100 pound me at the time. I got between him and the stroller, braced for impact, and he fully body slammed me. Knocked the wind out of the dog, he fell over, must have really thrown him because he went running back to his owner. Toddler just watched in utter confusion, one of those "What happened, Mom?" kind of looks on his face. He's not scared of dogs, but is a little shy around them. We're working on it. I was fine, but extremely annoyed. When the owner apologized to me I looked her in the eye and said deadpan "Nothing I can't handle." Which is true. ;) I'll leave it to your imagination, but suffice to say that the outcome that happened was by far the best possible outcome for everybody. They've been reeeeeeally careful ever since.

Same neighborhood, I had to save a lady and her dog from two loose dogs last year. They were going for her dog, she's starting to panic, so I just dropped my voice an octave and calmly told them to go home while pointing back up the street. They left! :confused:Craziest thing... I didn't think it would actually work. I was getting ready to call 911 honestly.

Going to get some dirt today. Don't have any to pot up that strawberry runner and need some. Plus, want to get one of my cheap pots planted up with basil for the other neighbor and surprise her before we leave. We had excess basil last year and after cooking with some once, she was very invested in my garden plot suddenly. Also, the aloe could really use a top-up of quality soil. It's still in the pot it came in, has nearly died at least three times, and is just now looking really, really good under the grow lights where the cats can't chew on it. Dang cats.

I have german shepherds. I could not control my male, he killed 5 chickens and 3 cats. I fenced the area for them, almost 7 ft tall and when I let the chickens out I lock the male in a storage space behind the house, just in case. there is a mesh fence so plenty of sunshine if he needs it. one corner is protected from wind and rain and the whole place is roofed. I am not taking any chances with him.

ICK - Day 7 of chicks/poults inside. My head hurts - the dust, I guess. 2 more days and they get evicted to the barn. Turkeys make more noise, for sure.

On the 6 week old chicks - we got straight run SS, and looks like 2 are girls and one is a male. This is good bc we will keep the male SS.

There is an unwanted male EE in that 6 week old batch, so we will likely get rid of him soon. No need to keep him around as we would prefer to keep the SS male. It also looks like a BR is a male, but I'm going to wait to see in another 2-3 weeks to be sure.

The current 8 month male in the flock - the only one right now (chicks don't count yet), might have made a very slight attempt at crowing today...hard to tell, he was hiding from me. Maybe he'll start to try to protect the flock, tidbit, mate...he is a late bloomer it seems.

Here is the late bloomer. 8 months old, no eggs, looks male, was bought as a male (so sexed as a male), but no mating, or any male behavior yet. He was only 7 months old in this pic.

Yeah, we’ve wondered this too. However, no eggs from “him”. He’s not exhibiting any female traits at all (roosting a lot, scratching, checking out nest boxes, treat hound), but he is acting like other breed/late blooming males we have had. I guess if an egg is produced, that will settle it!

Good morning all. Apparently getting my new car inspected isn't happening anytime soon. It looks like a nationwide malware attack took down the system used by motor vehicle registries. I've been putting off errands, but I really need to pick up a few things today. DD and I tried insta-carting to get a few grocery items but it took two attempts to finally get a ham for Sunday dinner. Windy with showers today and temps currently in upper 30's, ick! I'm planning on planting a few of the cold season items on Sunday. Whatever doesn't go into the hoop bed, I'm using the clear plastic cups I bought as "cold caps" to protect them from the cooler temps. Has anybody tried this before? My tomato seedlings are starting to develop their secondary leaves as is the giant yellow squash plant. Aside from the peppers, pretty much all the seeds I planted are coming up and looking good. I'm feeling better about this planting season, last year was pretty miserable.

Got to be careful with straight salt though. Salting the ground too heavily can turn it barren.

To be fair....when I used the salt, it was around the chicken feeders and on concrete. I didn't use it in the garden.

My strawberries are planted in a tower made from tires. Would be really difficult to use salt or DE there because I think it would just wash away. Best bet might be the copper tape. I will just have to get some more.

@Wee Farmer Sarah - I haven't tried the cups but I'm super curious how it'll work out for you! It's supposed to be chilly this weekend so I'm holding off on putting anything out till Sun or Mon. Maybe. LOL

Still a bit rainy here, not much happening. My new beds are supposed to be in today but they're coming USPS so I'd bet my first born that I won't see them for a couple more days. (I have no kids, lol) I'm just hoping they show up by Sat. Our mail lady is SO bad - DH drops his peoples time sheets in the mail every week, 50% of the time she puts our mail in the box, puts the flag down & leaves his outgoing mail! I don't get it. He has been known to chase her down the road. :gig
