What did you do in the garden today?

Making a 40 degree swing in temp from 40F early this morning to 80F around 4 or 5 pm. Then we settle back into the 60s tonight and warm up to 80 again tomorrow.

The crazy shift in temps today brings gusty winds with it. I'm getting the grass seed in finally though.

In health news, the second Covid test also came back negative. This was a more accurate one. I may try to reconnect with the doctor Monday if needed. I have a lot of chest congestion still. It got hard to breath a few times yesterday while getting yard work done. Today should be easier tasks thankfully.

Gonna start pulling up the dead Asian jasmine- it comes up better after a good rain. I will be so glad when every inch is gone.

Good afternoon gardeners. Everyone’s gardens are looking so nice! I love all the flower pics. I was thinking of you guys today as I walked out of the garden center at walmart giggling to myself. I needed a few things there and decided to see what they have for geraniums because Lowe’s and HD only had red or light pink. I found one that’s a dark pink that’ll go with the other two annuals I have in the side yard. I ALSO walked out with two purple lantana They are a trailing variety and will spread up to six feet so I’m going to put one between a couple of shrubs I have against the west wall and the other... I dunno yet but maybe somewhere out in the xeriscape area. I watered the veggies today. The tomato plants are still pretty small but growing tomatoes nonetheless. I suspect the harvest won’t be great this year but once the plants are spent I’ve got some great bunny litter to spread in there. The garlic isn’t doing great and it’s probably too hot. I was going to pull a couple and see what they look like because they’re already dead on topI felt rushed to get the whole thing going so I’m a bit irritated by it all. Next year will be better and I’ll be more prepared. So far the watermelon is hanging on and the flowers have to begun to wither on the squash. I’m super excited that at least something is doing well. The luffa is too, it has really started to spread. If the garlic is toast I have the blocks to finish off that area as a separate bed for shallow root items and then I can fill the bed with soil and bunny litter. I think I’m going to try layers and add some worm castings as well. I cleaned waterers and pools this morning and put some fresh straw down in the duck house. It’s already almost to the top of the blocks so that will have to be cleaned out before long. I already have plans for it. Anyway, sorry to ramble, have a great day all.

The first time I had pneumonia I was running a fever, congested, achy and really tired. I thought it was the flu. I felt better for a day then sick again. I ended up in the emergency room then was admitted to the hospital. After a little over a week of illness. It nearly killed me.

yes, @BReeder! Pneumonia can be serious. Best caught early.

My youngest got pneumonia in 2nd grade. She had symptoms for maybe 6-12 hours and actually got bad really, super fast (but already known to have small airways). So, it surprised me, but little person, little lungs. That episode really was irritating though bc she was the THIRD student to get bacterial pneumonia at that school in a month (did they notify us?? No). Did they do a deep clean the school...um yeah, a month or so later after a few more kids got it. Pneumonia can scar your lungs snd ive always heard that it’s easier to get pneumonia once you’ve had it. Grrr... but, she no longer attends that school and now they thankfully have a different principle, bc a principle, after all, is a manager of the school and the one they had at that time, was a lackluster manager in many ways (but, was not actually the worst principle we had encountered in the various places we’ve lived/schools attended). So, you don’t want to wait for pneumonia to get bad.

I’m sure that’s really frustrating Penny. We’ve had two rats and poison got them both and they both died in the shed. It’s kind of irritating that I have to use bins for kitchen scraps and a pile for everything else.

So, scoped out the 4 spots for the fruit trees. I put the shovel to ground and made a circle, but removed no dirt. Not really gardening, but at least I chose the 4 (out of six) markers I’ll use for the trees.

then I put up the portable fence for the 4 week old turkeys and chicks to be in the run but separate. They had to be caught to go out, then re-caught to go back in. Sigh, a dusty business. We were advised to not put the turkeys out until they were at least 6 weeks old. They will be in a separate pen from the chickens at that point.

then discovered that we still have an egg eater... and a nest box pooper. So, I went to get eggs out of the nest box straw, snd grabbed a poopy egg (yuck), washed my hands, put on gloves, rubbed the egg with clean straw. Then discovered that the other eggs In that box were covered with drying raw egg. We close the nest boxes at night, so the pooper went in there this afternoon.

tomorrow should be nice, and we should be able to get some things done in the garden.

Make sure to tell her about keeping poultry and messing with compost and dirt. Not being able to breathe is terrible. Taking musinex to keep it loose ?
