What did you do in the garden today?

Eclipse was pretty this morning, as always.
Camera on the new Samsung STINKS, I miss my old one.

Watered the garden last night. Found cutworm damage on two plants, I'll collar that whole row and the next.

Mowing today, cleaning corral for shearing Friday, and errands. Storms tonight. Picking up 2-5 inches of rain between tonight and Tuesday morning. Need to keep the fluff butts dry for Friday so they'll get lock up tonight and until it's done raining Thursday. That will make them extra grumpy.

Oh, and I saw the strangest thing this morning in the greenhouse, a slug coming slowly down a thread of slug gook like it was a spider on a thread of silk. I had no clue they could do that.

I'm thinking it was a slug riding slug gook down a spider leader line.

I won't get much done today in the garden other than picking a bunch of cilantro for a friend and digging some onions (Egyptian Walking Onions) for dinner tonight.

It is raining now. Oh happy day! I'll check the rain gauge later to see just how happy.

I watered last night & finished it up this am. Hoping for some thunderstorms & rain tonight, it'll be hit or miss, but we sure could use the rain.

I had to go to Home Depot yesterday & was excited to walk through all the marked down stuff, but I didn't see any. I did buy a new pot for one of the new dahlia tubers I was given & I got some lavender seed. I think the dog peed on one of my brand new lavender plants & killed it. Dumb boy dog, I wanted a girl.

I also looked for purple pole beans, dang those are hard to find around here! Purple bush, sure, I have tons. I'm going to have to order them in the fall I guess.

Does anyone know if bush & pole beans can cross pollinate?

@Sueby, I have a partial bag (a dozen-ish seeds) of purple pole beans left over from 2019. If you want them, PM me your address, if you're comfortable with that, and I'll mail them out to you.

They can.

I figured since they are the same genus & species. I like to save seeds so I'll have to plant them far enough apart that they probably (hopefully!) won't cross pollinate.

Yes they can . However it is unlikely to happen due to the fact that beans self pollinate before the flower fully opens . I have tried to hand pollinate a cross with no success . Timing is critical . As you must remove the anthers before pollen is shed and then add the desired pollen when the pistil is receptive .

Interesting. I knew they self pollinated & it would be unlikely they would cross if planted not too close, but I didn't know it was THAT unlikely! I didn't realize they pollinated before fully open. Thanks for the info.
