What did you do in the garden today?

Can I get a second opinion on this garlic? This is the garlic back in Colorado, so I can't go out and look at it myself, and the pictures are courtesy of DH. I feel like the smaller plants to the left are ready or very close, but doubtful about the larger ones to the right.

Also @TJAnonymous so terribly sorry your silkie is not doing well. I hope she pulls through.

Garlic is ready when the lower leaves are browning.
You can also pull one you think is ready and the bulb should be full and not hollow or papery or soft.
Yeah... DH isn't, um, quite that savvy yet. Lol. He'll get there, just need more time.

@Artichoke Lover he said it's been raining a lot, but those beds drain pretty well, so I'm not too concerned with the moisture levels at the moment. My larger concern is leaving my garlic in the hands of my MIL, who is completely clueless about vegetables of any kind. She's a plant it and forget it type. But, probably going to have to and just cross my fingers. As much as I want the garlic to be ready, I think it's got at least a couple more weeks, and DH will be home before then.

Mil is also the type to stick flowers (yes perennials) in a pot and once they're done blooming she chucks them and buys something else... seems a bit wasteful to me I guess.

She sounds like my mom. My first adventures in gardening were reviving her potted plants. Forcing bulbs that she would throw out in the yard etc...

Yup, I saved some of her plants, coaxed them to bloom again, and so she wanted them back. Then when they died back again in a few weeks, you guessed it, chuck.

I also pulled a bunch of radishes. I need to plant more now. I think I'm going to pickle this bunch. I love pickled radishes.
I just looked up pickled and roasted radish recipes, I generally only really like the fresh ones when they are still pretty tiny. This is the first time I've had hard-neck garlic and I'm learning too. I watch the leaves and once a few start turning yellow, I reach into the ground and feel how big the bulbs are. The reds were huge but the whites seem to be not as far along. I've pulled (dug rather) all the reds and just a few of the whites. Doesn't look like I planted any soft-necks at all. The shallots are coming along, the few I saved from last year are forming those frightening huge clumps again this year, the others are much smaller and rounder. I'll be curious to see which we like better.

The littles finally figured out how to get outside under the coop in their protected area, hopefully they'll go back inside before it gets too late. If not, they're fully feathered so they can group together and stay warm. Waiting to see if the big girls go back to the coop tonight instead of calling them in.

Hope your girl gets better @TJAnonymous.
