What did you do in the garden today?

I also would suggest squirrels. They make a heck of a mess in my garden, saving their nuts for the winter. Dig real deep too
I have pulled at least 30 little oak trees starting to grow from acorns buried in & around my garden! They have finally stopped rooting around in there, but they sure did make a mess earlier in the season, knocking over my onion starts & destroying my dill. :smack
Oh, and pick the garlic scapes! The tender ones get sautéed in with just about anything. The ones that are too tough get chopped up and used when I make bone broth in the Instant Pot. Which will be next week while DH is on vacation. He hates the smell.
That's a great idea, thanks! I have lots of bones from the cow to make broth with, had never thought to use the scapes for it! I'll have more scapes than I know what to do with soon. There is nothing like home made bone broth, but I agree with your DH, it doesn't smell great. I've thought about simmering it on the grill burner outside instead of in the house...

Not too much going on here but the heat & humidity broke. I'll pick some dill today & get it in the freezer, it's getting big & looks great. I need to save some before the swallowtail caterpillars move in & strip it bare.

I saw the bunny that's been stripping my pole bean starts that are outside of the garden. I always plant lots of extras hoping that some make it big enough to survive his munching. Jerk.

Speaking of, have y'all seen this video of Chunk the groundhog that was destroying this guys garden? Then Chunk shows up with a girlfriend.... :gig

I haven't done a whole lot in the garden lately, the nice weather has had me wanting to spend more time riding my horses. But there hasn't been a lot that's pressing, just waiting for plants to grow. Tomatoes, eggplants and cukes are doing well, but none of my squash or pumpkins have even sprouted - they were all old seeds I wanted to use up, but I would have thought I'd get at least a few, as thickly as I sowed them. Oh well, I do have fall crop seeds that I know are good, as well as fall bulbs, to plant later in those spaces.

I am loving my new raised beds - takes a fraction of the time to weed, and I can just go nuts with the hoe in the areas in between.

Mr. Dog and I did get a lot done last weekend on the beds around the house - he cleared the bed near the front door and chopped the arborvitae down to waist height - our front entrance was looking like a haunted house, so overgrown the sidewalk was covered. I'm sure our postal carrier and delivery people are appreciating it now!

While he was doing the front I was cutting down the jungle and mulching in the back, here's how it turned out:

Nothing fancy, but I wish there was a "before" picture - the poor blueberries were surrounded by weeds, the sidewalk was totally buried in moss, and I'd forgotten we even had peonies there. We still need to pressure wash the sidewalk, but it's a big improvement.

Here's the garden, from 6 weeks or so ago, after putting in some raised beds but before mowing all the long grass and planting:

The bare area on the left now has tomatoes on trellises, and the middle area has basil. The tires (except the chive one which is doing great) are where the squash and pumpkins have failed. One of the beds has the eggplants, another cukes on a trellis, a third lettuce and spinach, one will have fall cabbage, and the last I haven't done anything with yet - probably carrots since it's so late. The permanent trellis gate thing to the left of the truck has two small beds one on either side, with loofahs (which I haven't even checked recently to see if they're still alive, boo) I'm hoping they grow up and over the trellis - it has a section of wire fencing attached over it - so that it will look less awkward.

Happily, the shrubs and trees (around the far edge of the field) all except for the few fails from Gurney's, are doing well. Some of last year's red currants and blue elderberries are starting to actually grow berries!

Still have way too much to do, but except for a few fails, so far so good.

I took a walk around, had to tie up one sungold tomato. The others I'll do this weekend.

Grabbed some pics:
Lots of little squash, one that's a 2 in 1!

I think I'll make some mixed berry jam with the gooseberries, blueberries, strawberries & rhubarb.

ALrighty.
I THINK I know where the turkey hen has her nest. I'll try to keep an extra eye out while haying next week.
She wanders up the hill every day about 830 to eat under the mulberry tree. It drives the alpacas NUTS. They love chasing her.

Everyone wants under the Mulberry tree this time of year.

Heading for 100, humid 100 today, then stormy and windy tonight.
At least the tomatoes are all tied up now. I'm looking forward to that well water cold shower.

I have an almost red tomato in the garden already!

Heat index supposed to bump triple digits today.... Also supposed to rain so you can guess how high the humidity is going to be. I walked outside last night and it was so humid, you'd have thought I just walked out of a hot shower. 🤪 Temps will only get worse (hotter) through the weekend but at least the rain chances will SLIGHTLY diminish by Sunday. I checked the rain summaries again this morning.

May 1 - today is between 13.69 - 14.33 inches of rain near my house.
