What did you do in the garden today?

Hi! I garden as well, so I’m going to hop on this thread! Picked 2 big bowls of snap peas for dinner tonight! Ate sautéed Swiss chard, garlic scapes & spring onions w my eggs this morning all homegrown (& the eggs from my neighbors flock...still waiting to pick my chicks up next month!) Spotted the beginnings of tomatoes on a bunch of my plants, & a few beans w babies just starting! Uncovered my flowering zucchini & cukes. Squash vine borer is REAL & wiped out all my baby squash last year so I kept row cover on until now. Finally see a female flower ready to open so I had to do it. Fingers crossed! Also praying for a little rain, it’s forecasted for the next 10 days so I’m hoping it’s just an hour here or there so I can get outside between the showers. Hope you all have a great day!

@Acre4Me well slap a Non-GMO and 100% organic label on there and I'm sold!!

LOL. Kidding.

But, ya know - it is done all the time. And maybe there are some customers that think "oh good, its all natural granite!"

"Organic" Maple syrup. Likely ALL Maple Syrup is organic as they don't spray the trees, etc, its just that someone took the time to file the paperwork for Organic.

"Dehydrated Cane Juice" as an all natural, healthy sounding ingredient. Can you say "Sugar"?

Potato beds (2) still look really nice, but I can see the the earliest flowering type (Carola, a yellow potato) is on the downswing, although still putting out a few new flower clusters, even now. The "Blackberry" purple variety is now flowering more...I think all plants have emerging clusters or open flowers. And the Russett Burbank is also getting going with flower clusters and a few flowers. However, the RB is the longest season variety.

Carola is on the left side. "Blackberry" is on the lower right side, and RB is on the upper right side

Second patch: you see mostly Carola as I only have 2 RB on the right and 2 "Blackberry" on the left.

Gourds continue their quest to fill in the south side of the run. They are really looking for more height to climb! The far left side is over 12' tall.

New learning: When you exclude the #@*! Cabbage Looper from the Brassicas, they will lay eggs on all the Nastursium you are trying to grow - and the little baby green caterpillars will happily devour the leaves of the Natursium. Guess I'll only plant Marigolds next year.
I left my kale uncovered but broccoli, Brussels sprouts & cabbage covered. The loopers go after the kale instead but I have so much I don’t mind! 😂

Picked some purple green beans, they are delish!

I love those purple beans, too. Unfortunately, Dear Wife has something against purple beans - because they are not green - and does not want me to plant those anymore. I don't know what the big deal is because they turn green when you cook them.

Anyway, I had a few of those purple bean seeds left over from last year and have been using them to fill spots where my beans did not sprout in my square foot garden. Well, also, sometimes the squirrels dig up the bean seeds so I have to replant. So maybe I'll have some of those purple beans again this year. I agree, they are fantastic.

Tossing in - RAW milk on the pastures is AWESOME! Coming from a dairy farm background, and people have been doing it for centuries! It's good for the soil and adds back in so much mineral and bio-organics, good bugs.

Overage is routinely sprayed on fields.

What about pasteurized milk? We often have extra milk that goes bad before we use it all. I have just been dumping it down the drain. Is there any benefit to using pasteurized milk on the garden or in the compost bin?

I checked the fly bag trap, it's got a good inch thick layer of dead flies in it, seems to work!

LOL @gtaus - we sometimes have weird quirks, don't we? I ate the handful of beans raw, I like them better than the blue lakes & I imagine they will be easier to pick.

So I had to put some shade cloth up for the pole beans, the plants on the south side are not doing well, too much sun. I think next year I'm going to plant all the bush beans in the same bed as the pole beans & hope the bush provide shade for the poles. @WthrLady, was it you that said you plant them together? Does it work like I hope it will, lol? Do you plant them at the same time?

So I watered this am, everything looked thirsty. I am still working the strawberry runners, I just have a couple more to get established then I'll be snipping the rest off.

@jerryse - that sounds scary! Take care of yourself!

Yup I do, the pole go tall and the bush stay low. I plant them at the same time and let them duke it out.
