What did you do in the garden today?

Our power is off. Estimated restoration is 6:15 tonight. Since I don't know for SURE I'll be able to shower (no power = no running water), I'm not going out to work up a sweat. Which would take 2 minutes. Still very warm and humid.

I'll be out of battery on my wifi soon too. I have a chiro appointment at 10:30. Gonna leave early for that and get a cup of coffee. Might be a putter around town day. Go sit in the mall and watch other people spend too much money. :gig

the dahlias are finally in their groove,
Beautiful! The yellow one with delicate petals and brighter color in the center is stunning.
Dahlias are blooming:
Yours are gorgeous, too. As are all your other flowers.

I didn't plant any dahlias this year, but now I wish I did. I packed up last year's bulbs very carefully, hopefully they will still be good next year.

I move my rugs off every spring to clean and till, since they are picked up every year and moved I haven't had any problems for the last 8 years.
Also we have tons of cats and ducks. I haven't seen a snake in our yard for literal years. I've never had mice in my garden.
My big mistake was to use a large room size rug, for growing melons. After several years, the weeds grew up from under it and down through the surface as well. I rolled it back every year and tilled/added compost, but the weeds overcame it one season. That made it pull apart, when trying to pull it up. I spent days trying to get all the fibers up from the roots and soil, unsuccessfully. When it pulled apart into strands and fibers of strands it became a nightmare. Ps. We have about a thousand voles per acre here at least, not to mention the snakes that eat them. They loved the carpet mulch! Every year when I rolled it back, some field mice or more commonly, voles shot out and scattered. More than once , a snake or two was also under the old carpet! Black widow spiders were also present on every occasion! I am glad you have not had that problem. I see snakes almost daily here, sometimes young ones dangling from a hawks mouth or swimming in my pond, They are often under a tool or object left sitting on the ground. We have such an abundance of wildlife. I have watched a gray fox , 75 feet up, in an old white oak, eating a squirrel in my front yard. Lots of voles and other small mammals, makes for lots of snakes and other predators. I can shoot deer from my porch and coyotes help to control the stray dogs and cats. (though neighbors dogs were my worst predator on my sheep and goats!) Best wishes and good luck with the rugs!

Today, I have cut/picked okra and melons early this morning! Couldn't sleep past 6 am, anyway! 12 crimson sweet melons , 5 Tennessee Musk melons, 3 more Ananas melons, three gallon bucket of okra and a bushel of weeds later, I am having coffee and browsing the BYC site, now. Last night I prepared and put 5 trays of Red Pearl grape tomatoes in the dehydrator after unloading 5 trays of chopped sweet onions. If I was as healthy as ten years ago, I could keep up with the garden, but alas, I now have to live with less than I am happy with, in regards to my garden chores. However , my gardens still fill me with life and contentment, especially at meal time!

This thing has reached immovable status..!
