What did you do in the garden today?

There are several types of goldenrod. It's our state flower, and we spray for it in the pastures. Ragweed is also everywhere here and OMG both drive me insane, both in control and with allergies.

Nothing in the garden today, although I DID see a hummingbird in the zinnia patch and next year's seeds arrived in the post.

How do you store the seeds so they're still good for next years planting?

How do you store the seeds so they're still good for next years planting?

After I dry them on screen sheets I put them in an envelope, labeled and into a rubbermade container. (OH and there's a silicone pack in the container)
I should not do what I did two days ago, which was pick a grocery sack full of sunflower heads and 4 cups worth of marigold heads and seeds and toss that into the barn to grab later as it was too hot to deal with. This is how you grow mold on the sunflowers and mice take all the marigold seeds. UGH.

I'll start over this weekend.
The other seeds are from seed exchange, adding in some more paste tomatoes. to the mix of san marzano.

we’ve been dealing with a yellow jacket nest In our wall!! The entire house is brick..except for the wall area at the deck. This is thick cedar shake shingles. This wall is quite protected from the weather too. We started to notice a lot of wasps a few weeks ago. So, one night sprayed expanding foam wasp killer into the hole, under shingles…etc. but, not very much reduction in population /activity. Then we started to use a vacuum cleaner….just sitting in a chair sucking up wasps as they flew into/ out of the hole. Over several days, sucked up hundreds. Only 1 sting on one person this whole time.

today, with the population much reduced, we opened up the wall. The nest was about 12”x12”x 3”. The killing spray didn’t really work earlier bc they were entering and moving through a hole drilled into a stud for electric into another wall cavity. Luckily that cavity was accessible.

so, we know what we are doing the next few days -fixing the wall!

I started “soaking” the cucumbers earlier and am outside with my chickens a bit earlier than usual. I’m using the waiting time to make sure the girls get some grass time today. We only had a shower or two earlier today but this early afternoon has been filled with tornado warnings. I’ll take my cue from the hens if I need to take cover. I don’t know about Tennessee @Sueby, but New Hampshire’s property taxes are really high. That’s to compensate for no state income tax.

Tennessee has no income tax, fairly low property taxes but high sales tax

Iowa taxes you for EVERYTHING, I mean everything. There are freaking thousands that work for the government in our state and we get to pay for the assistant's, assistant's, assistant's assistant. Everyone passes their work on to the next. Sorry for the rant.
it took road maintenance in our county 2 weeks to fill in 2 potholes by the stop sign. No I'm not exaggerating.

How do you freeze the scrambled eggs? Beat them all then measure them into ice cube trays?

Yes. I have silicon muffin pans so it fits a whole egg & then it works well for baking.

@Wee Farmer Sarah I do save lots of regular eggs too, but I don't have a lot of room on the counter or in the fridge so being able to freeze some works well.

Nasty out there today, not much happening. Just need to keep an eye on the heat with my broken chicken. She's still not using that leg much, I'll get a little more aspirin in her this am.

LOL NOW I see the confusion in my ragweed/goldenrod reply. I meant to type "Those are some pretty yellow flowers behind the garden TOO."
I know the difference between the two.
Heck, my lawn is 50% truncated ragweed!

Chores done, walk had, tomatoes staring at me on the counter. I've lost the mood to can.
I forgot to check my jars before bed and one of the beef jars didn't seal. So I lost that jar to the hens as it sat out all night. Oh well. It did let me test how beef rib meat came out canned. TENDER and fall apart!
I'll be sure to get more.

I think I'll visit the next county over and go to the thrift store.
No gardening, we're heading for another day over feeling like a humid 110.

It's turning into the wild west out there. OH I was going to rip out the weed/zinnia patch, but I found the migrating hummingbirds and monarchs stopping last evening, so NOPE. It stays. I will be planting a larger bed of zinnias for them next year, but NOT in the garden.

I need to find out where the sprinkler heads are so I can plant near them for my own ease of watering.
