What did you do in the garden today?

Morning all. Raining quite a bit here, I think we've got a few inches already.
Have you thought about getting organic garlic at Whole Foods @Sueby.
That was actually @Acre4Me that needed the garlic. So, Acre4Me, if you can't find any I can send you a clove or 2. I have both hardneck & softneck. The soft neck looks great this year, the hard neck has a couple generations here & it's never been all that big, it came from a local garden store. This is the softneck: https://www.highmowingseeds.com/organic-non-gmo-inchelium-red-garlic.html

Planted some tomato plants, weeded, had the puddin scared out of me by a field mouse that decided it wanted to make a home in my garden without asking me first...the usual

Shopping today and hoping to get more apples from a friend for pie filling canning. I've started taking Penny on very short walks outside our fence (and so new territory to her) and she's doing great! We were so lucky to get her, she is such a good girl!

I loved red delicious as a kid but they've gotten mealy over the years. Opals and honeycrisp are my favorites now.

I do love honeycrisp!

I made 2 batches of shepards pie (Or cottage pie, I guess). One for dinner, one for the freezer. I make it with mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes so I made a few extra of those to freeze too. I also put my green beans in it instead of corn.

Blanched & froze more beans. Picked more peppers & sungolds too.

& @Wee Farmer Sarah I can't even remember what we had for dinner last night so I get that! :gig

I have some friends coming over to can on Monday. I'm doing my hot sauce. They're doing hot pepper jam. I have to set up the outdoor kitchen this weekend & remember to take the peppers out of the freezer!

I was digging up some invading grass at the edge of the garden and must have gotten 50 little Japanese Beetle grubs. Ha ha, more protein for the chickens, less root damage by grubs, and fewer JBs in a few years. Triple win!

Now I have even more reason to dig out the grass/weeds. I needed that kick in the pants.

I’m making my first double batch of applesauce tomorrow. Sunday going to BJ’s to sign up. Just the savings in bread making supplies will cover the membership cost. And since I don’t have room for even 1/4 of a cow, I can stock up on their specials. And of course the bacon prices are better.

Piling alpaca poo in the long, empty garden rows today when DH cleans the stalls.
I'll go into town and get some free compost to put on top of that later this fall.

I also tore off the large over-haning, window wing on the chicken run this week to replace with a solid wall with windows. I need to finish that today as we are headed again into the 90s the rest of the week before the rain comes next week. THEN I can order the new steel roof. I can't get a good measurement until the adjoining wall is up. LOL. It's always something.

So I suppose I'll pop off here and go paint some plywood and go do things while it all dries.

Have a great day all.

Good morning gardeners. Nice and cool this morning around 52F when I got up. I picked a few more green beans, lima beans, okra and chard. I have a few jalapenos that I'll likely pick tomorrow. The bugs are making their way through the late kale and rutabagas so I have no expectations of harvesting any of that. The carrots are still doing well. The good news is these bugs don't have a taste for chard so there's that. As mentioned before, the plan for the day is to cook and can a double batch of applesauce. Then make a big pot of chicken vegetable soup for dinner. It looks like more Autumn like temps are here but they're still a bit warm highs in the low 70's and overnight in the mid 40's to 50's. Nice sleeping weather, but not great growing weather. I hope the grass slows down too. I'm taking a day or two off from drying herbs. I think I'm on sensory overload after all the herb drying then bringing flowers and rosemary plants indoors to overwinter. Not to mention the cinnamon broom I bought last week. What was I thinking? LOL! I'm glad the garden season is about over here. I'm a little worn out from it all and will be happy after all the harvest is processed and either frozen or canned. Looking forward to kicking back and waiting for the snow to start flying. Have a great day everyone.

Now you're talking, can't wait for snow! :wee

We got the concrete pad poured at the run gate, glad thats done. Hope I don't need to get in the run for anything till it dries!

I may try drying some herbs @Wee Farmer Sarah - I have some sage I'd like to try. My mint took over & kind of squeezed out the thyme so I don't have much to dry. Is it a bad idea to do them at the same time? It seems like you do all yours separately? Any tips for me? I usually just throw them in the freezer & pull them out as needed, but I want to try drying.

My 2 new garden beds showed up, I think I'll wait till spring to put them together.
