I walked outside yesterday and there were 3 hawks sitting in the trees around my coop... If I didn't have nets over my run, I'm certain I'd have less chickens today. Mine have been cooped up for over a month now while I'm trying to get some game hens to use a new coop. I finally took pity on everyone and let them out to free range this afternoon. I'm still paranoid about the hawks though. DH is outside burning cardboard and I'm hoping that will be a deterrentI was outside with Max a few days ago and a very large red tailed hawk swooped down to check him out. I’ve heard coyotes in the woods early in the morning also. I worry about the local gang of wild turkeys. All the predators are hungry.
I got the pink lemonade variety and found a blog from someone in the Phoenix area who has grown them. I’m trying out the growing mixture that works for them, half soil/half peat moss, a couple cups of soil sulfur, a couple handfuls of worm castings and some pine mulch. Wish me luck, they’re going into the shade garden today. I also was able to confirm that “full sun” doesn’t mean the AZ sun lol. I have some 25 gallon grow bags to transplant them to next year. I might move the elephant ears into a couple of those so I can move them to the front porch in summer where they’ll get quite a bit more shade. They’re one of my favorite plants and they struggle in the summer sun here, the leaves get rather crispy. Still working on trimming shrubs and such. I think I’m going to wait on the Arabian lilac until next year though so I can see what shape it wants to be, it’s bushy but not particularly tall yet and I want it to be tree. I’m planting moonflowers around the center trellis in the shade garden today and have a plan for a trellis for more in another space once the lilac and olive tree are big enough. I also need to move a poor little rosemary bush to a spot that gets more sun. The place I put it gets hardly any sun in winter and it’s struggling. That is one herb that can take the heat and AZ sun! I went to the AZ worm farm in Phoenix for my worms and that place is AMAZING! They allow folks to walk around their farm and see how they make things work. I didn’t wander, I was pressed for time, but I swear the heads of lettuce were almost three feet tall. I will definitely be going back in a couple of weeks. Anyway, the sun should be up shortly and I need to get busy. Take care everyone! Stay warm and dry.
