What did you do in the garden today?

Thanks. I'll see about getting some scions this weekend. Any recommendations? Are you familiar with either of the 2 varieties I mentioned?
I love Seckel . Sometimes called sugar pears . Brownish skin smaller size but will set fruit without another tree to pollinate .Seckel will ripen on the tree. Bartlett is sometimes self fruitful . Depends on climate . Bartlett is a longtime favorite of growers . Needs to be ripened off the tree .As a kid the Seckel were my favorite .

That's funny. The reading I've done says Seckel requires a pollinator, but that Bartlett won't pollinate Seckel... yet I can't find info on what will pollinate Seckel. I think I'll go with Seckel, based on flavor, and disease resistance. Fedco Trees is having a tree sale 1st week of May, so I may pick up an other variety to plant near the grafted tree.

The seckel we had in the neighborhood self pollinated . There were other pears said to be bartlett but really too far away to help . Both set good crops even the isolated trees . Pretty sure Bartlett was not the real name . I think they were intentionally mislabeled . Grandma knew what she bought . These got ripe in mid September and Bartlett is ripe in August . I had a Seckle in a small town that set fruit . Only pear tree in town . Only about 4 blocks in the town .

Finally got some seeds into seed trays, only 2 wks behind schedule but more than a week ahead of last year's attempt.

Got 8 1/2 doz. maters in trays~Brandywine, Pruden's Purple, Big Rainbow, Jetstar, Roma, and Sweet One Millions.

6 doz. peppers in trays and this time I've studied up on how to get them to germinate better, so they are in shallow soil and sitting on heating pads set on 6 for right now. They are sitting in a window in the cabin while the other trays are in Mom's garden tub, where there's good light all day long from her skylight.
Peppers include~Kaleidoscope Mix(Green peppers, purple, red, pale yellow, etc.), sweet banana peppers, hot banana peppers, jalapenos, and some unknown little sweet pepper from the store....looks like a little hot pepper but has a really good flavor and is sweet. My brother requested that one
.
Also did a dozen of celery...not sure if those will come up. Those seeds are as tiny as baby fleas. Oh...and a half dozen chives.

Now...I still have a wash pan I usually plant with something, usually flowers, herbs or some such, so I'll have to decide what to plant in that.

Got a new Oak sapling in the ground and replanted Black Peredovik Sunflowers. This time I'm covering the seeded area with fence. Evidently, chickens like baby sunflowers as much as they like the seeds

I went out and found sunflower stalks only. NO leaves.

Thanks. I called my friend. Hope to stop out tomorrow afternoon and cut some scion wood. This is exciting, but I've never done it before, and will be just winging it from internet info.

Today, I filled 4 seedling flats with potting soil. Set up my frame in LR window, and will sow seeds in the next couple of days. I usually get peppers started mid March, so off to a late start this year. But, when I tend bator full of eggs, the gardening takes a back seat. I have 10 cattle panels to install around the garden. Plan to use the spiral wire clips so they can be easily re-configured if I have to change garden lay out in the future.

I watered my planted seeds. The wind is drying out the ground. We've had some nasty, gusting wind. Too miserable to do much outside.
I'm sorry your drying out.

We are drowning here. The wind has been blowing for days but the mud is still so bad I don't want to go out to the chicken coop. So DH has been doing their chores.

Too cold to work outside today. Started some seedlings: 4 kinds of tomatoes, 12 sweet peppers of varying kinds, Red Echinacea, Coreopsis, Savory, Tarragon, Chives, Dill, Parsley, Asparagus, Basil, Oregano. Put MHP under the asparagus, peppers, tomatoes. One more flat to sow, and need to pick up 2 more. This year, in an effort to simplify, all seeds are being sowed in 6 packs, so shouldn't need to be transplanted before moving into the garden.

@lazy gardener nice work! I started tarragon and fennel from seed this year for the first time. I was always afraid they were difficult to start from seed. I started my cukes too early, and they desperately need to be transplanted. I may have to plant them and cover with old cut out milk jugs to protect them.
